On August 12, Maine Community Integration celebrated International Youth Day with our 2nd Annual Ride for Resilience, in partnership with Portland Gear Hub.
This year’s theme, Different Contexts. Common Aspirations., reflects what we see every day: young people may come from different cultures, neighborhoods, languages, and lived experiences, but they share common aspirations, to be safe, healthy, connected, valued, and hopeful about their future.
Ride for Resilience is about much more than giving away bicycles.
We are grateful to our partner Portland Gear Hub for their continued dedication to our youth and environmental stewardship. Through their work, 65 donated bicycles were repaired, refurbished, and returned to young people in our community. What might have become waste instead became transportation, recreation, independence, and opportunity; environmental stewardship made tangible.
A bicycle also becomes a pathway to movement, parks, trails, nature, friendship, and exploration, expanding the geography of childhood. With new helmets, bike locks, and road-safety education, that freedom is paired with safety, knowledge, and responsibility.
Thank you to the City of Lewiston, Mayor Carl Sheline, City Administration, and Lewiston Police Department for supporting Ride for Resilience and bringing the City’s C.E.A. β€” Community Engagement and Accountability Initiative into the Sunnyside Park neighborhood. We especially appreciated Mayor Sheline joining us and spending time with our youth and families, while officers engaged with young people throughout the day, creating positive encounters and relationships that help build trust before moments of crisis.
This is what prevention can look like: investing upstream in the environments, experiences, relationships, and opportunities that help young people thrive.
The bicycle is the vehicle. The destination is resilience.
Thank you also to all the local media outlets and journalists who covered Ride for Resilience, helping share a positive story about our youth, our partners, and our community.
Ride for Resilience will return every August 12, International Youth Day, continuing an annual tradition of environmental stewardship, youth well-being, community connection, and investment in the possibilities of the next generation.

COMMUNITY UPDATE: Tooth Protectors Dental Clinics
We want to update our families and community members regarding our monthly Tooth Protectors Dental Clinics.
The July and August clinics were canceled, and the dental clinics scheduled for September and beyond are currently paused until further notice due to dental provider's availability.
Tooth Protectors is working to secure a new dental hygienist and has let us know that MCI will be one of the first locations contacted once a provider becomes available.
We value this partnership and know how important accessible dental services are to our families. We will keep you updated as soon as we have information about when the clinics will resume.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
