Today we wrapped up our Fire Safety Unit with an amazing visit from the Lewiston Fire Department! ๐โค๏ธ
Our firefighters spent time teaching the children about the importance of smoke alarms, what to do if there is a fire, and how firefighters are there to help keep us safe. They reminded the kids that if they can't get out safely, they should stay calm, and firefighters will come find them.
One of the biggest lessons was seeing a firefighter in full turnout gear with an oxygen mask on. The children got to hear what the breathing sounds like and learned why the suit beeps. This helped them understand that even though firefighters may look and sound different during a fire, they are still friendly helpers and should never hide from them.
After the safety lesson, we headed outside to explore the fire truck! The children loved seeing all the different compartments filled with firefighting equipment, learning about the tools firefighters use to help people, and taking turns sitting in the firefighter's seat like a real firefighter. We even finished the visit with a fun group photo!
Throughout our fire safety unit, the children learned:
๐ฅ The importance of working smoke alarms.
๐ฅ To get out quickly and stay out during a fire.
๐ฅ To have a family meeting place outside.
๐ฅ That firefighters are helpers, even when wearing masks and special gear.
๐ฅ Never to hide during a fire.
๐ฅ To listen carefully to trusted adults and emergency responders.
A huge THANK YOU to the Lewiston Fire Department for taking time out of your day to visit Sandcastle Kids, answer our many questions, and help make fire safety fun and memorable. We appreciate everything you do to keep our community safe! โค๏ธ๐

A special thank you to Officer Heckathorn with the Clarkston Police Department and his K-9 partner, Koda, for helping us wrap up our Stranger Danger/Safe Side unit today!
Throughout this series, our preschoolers learned important personal safety skills, including how to recognize safe adults, what to do if they ever feel unsafe, how to trust their instincts, the importance of knowing their full name and parents' names, and when and how to call 911. We also practiced staying with trusted adults, never going anywhere with a stranger, and using a loud, confident voice to get help if needed.
Officer Heckathorn presented each child with their Safe Side certificate, introduced everyone to Koda, answered lots of great questions, and even showed the children his police car. It was a fun and memorable way to reinforce these valuable safety lessons.
Thank you, Officer Heckathorn and Koda, for taking the time to invest in the safety and confidence of our little learners. We truly appreciate all you do for our community!

Watching the kids get so excited to snack from their very own garden brings me so much joy. ๐ฑ๐
Thereโs something so special about seeing them learn where food comes from, care for the plants, and proudly taste what they helped grow. These little moments are what make it all worth it. ๐

Today in preschool we learned all about worms! ๐ What a great way to celebrate Earth Day!
We talked about where worms live, how they move, and how they help keep our soil healthy. Worms can grow their tails back but not their heads! The children loved pretending to be worms by wiggling their fingers through muddy paint to create their own โworm artโ โ it was messy and fun!
We also worked on recognizing the letter G and practiced identifying it in words and around the classroom.
Along with our learning, we had an important conversation and animal rolplaying about kindness to animals and insects, and how we can take care of the small creatures in our world.
It was a fun, hands-on day full of learning and creativity!
