NY Project Hope is a FEMA funded program that is providing crisis counseling and public education in response to COVID-19. This includes an Emotional Support Helpline that was initiated by the Governor’s office at the beginning of the pandemic. I’m writing to ask if the NYS Middle School Association would help us tell more people about the free, confidential crisis counseling services offered through this statewide initiative of the New York State Office of Mental Health.

How does NY Project Hope help?
Our Emotional Support Helpline is staffed by trained crisis counselors who help callers talk through their emotions and find resources to help them with the challenges of COVID. NY Project Hope also has a website filled with resources that folks can access anytime at www.nyprojecthope.org, as well as a supportive social media presence. We welcome you to take a look and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Our services are always confidential, free, and anonymous.

Attached you will find media tools and resources that we hope you will copy, paste, and post to tell folks about NY Project Hope services. We can also provide a list serv email to send to your members as well as virtual public education sessions to share additional information about this program.

The NYS Middle School Association has partnered with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County to offer a virtual workshop that brings the global history of the Holocaust into the local narrative by exploring American responses to the Holocaust. After seeing symbols of white supremacy and anti-Semitism on full display at the Capitol riots on January 6th this workshop is particularly timely. Binghamton University is conducting a research study on teachers’ perceptions of common issues that students face in the classroom, including food allergies and anxiety. The researchers are hoping to gain a better understanding of these issues to ultimately assist in informing areas of focus for school-based interventions and trainings. Teachers who are currently teaching students in any grade from 6th grade to 12th grade in the United States are welcome to participate. Study participation entails answering survey questions on an online survey (link below) which should take about 20-25 minutes of your time with an optional 5-10 minute supplement at the end. As compensation for completing the study, participants may opt to provide their mailing address to receive a copy of the American Psychological Association’s “My Anxious Mind: A Teen’s Guide to Managing Anxiety and Panic” for their classroom library.

An unprecedented event for middle school teachers is about to unfold virtually connecting literacy leaders around the globe with Egyptian and American teachers as well as teachers from many other countries. What makes the Beyond the App unique is that teachers will share their knowledge building on the best literacy practices for middle grades. All participants will choose sessions where they will hear from international experts from the United States, Egypt, and Mauritius and engage them in discussion sharing their challenges and effective strategies.

Background:

As a result of the COVID pandemic, teachers have been required to move much more quickly than they had planned to enact effective literacy learning in digital environments. It is often said that if the only tool you have is a hammer, all the world looks like a nail. So often, we find ourselves gravitating toward a cool app or site when we really should be thinking about what the best tool is for instructional and learning purposes. This fully digital conference is intended to expand the digital tools teachers might use to make the most effective use of online literacy instruction and go additional steps Beyond the App. The conference activities are interactive and immersive. Participants will learn with hands on keyboards, taps on screens, and with a full range of digital environments that promote interaction and immersive learning for their students, as well. As more teachers and their students are going to school online, the benefits accrue to all.

Facilitating "Community Circles" is a way to build and maintain a healthy virtual or in-person classroom community in which every member feels valued, respected, and connected. Through Circles, students and staff develop and strengthen the 5 core social-emotional competencies that support a positive classroom climate and student learning:
* Self-Awareness
* Self-Regulation
* Social Awareness
* Relationship Skills
* Responsible Decision-Making.

Participants will develop community by engaging in virtual community circles. They will feel supported and connected and learn how and why to incorporate virtual and/or in-person community circles into their own practice as a critical part of community-building.

Community members will meet via Zoom from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on select Mondays in August, September, and October, totaling 8 hours of CTLE-approved professional learning. Join us to experience the power of community for yourself and your students.
