Greenbrier Community School

Greenbrier Community School Greenbrier Community School is an independent, coeducational day school enrolling children from Nido(18 -36 mos) through Grade 8.

As an independent, non-profit day school established in 1999, we educate students 18 months through 8th grade, and are governed by a Board of Trustees. Greenbrier Community School is a vital community of children, families and faculty, all working together to provide the best possible atmosphere for optimum growth of the students. Our mission is to cultivate an inclusive community, founded on rela

tionships, that nurtures the whole child and inspires creativity, problem solving, and independent thinking through challenging and collaborative learning experiences—empowering every student to grow as an engaged citizen and critical thinker. GCS envisions a learning community where every child is known, valued, and challenged to achieve academic excellence and personal goals. Rooted in strong relationships and an inclusive culture, our school fosters intellectual curiosity, emotional growth, and social responsibility through rigorous, collaborative, and meaningful learning experiences. At GCS, students are active participants in their education. Through hands-on, experiential learning paired with high academic standards and authentic engagement with the world around them, students develop confidence, leadership, resilience, and the ability to navigate complexity with empathy and purpose. We value strong collaboration between parents and educators and believe that exceptional education is sustained by supported, qualified, and caring educators.

We are on Day 3 of the 2026-27 School Year here at Greenbrier Community School and we are already so excited by all that is happening and all that we are seeing. Students are learning their way around the school, the names of their teachers and classmates, and new routines. We are intentionally working to get to know one another deeply as we work to establish trust, friendship, and a sense of community. And, we are having fun playing games, reading books, discovering what we will be studying this year, and enjoying the amazing weather we've been having. We know that students thrive when they feel safe and known and we really love spending the first days and weeks of school laying that foundation.

Enjoy a few glimpses of the first 3 days of school at GCS where we welcome students ages 18 months through the 8th grade.

We are loving welcoming our students back this morning. It's going to be a wonderful school year!

Signs of excitement and welcome are all around at Greenbrier Community School! We have invited students and their families into the school for the past two days for classroom visits. All are able to look around their classrooms, meet teachers, and ask questions. These visits are so important for connection between the school and families and also for helping students feel more comfortable when they arrive on Monday for their first day of school! We are looking forward to a wonderful year of learning and community with new and returning students from ages 18 months through 8th grade! It's going to be a fantastic year!

Sarah Elkins will lead weekly Socratic Seminars for Middle School students. Sarah is no stranger to GCS, and we are thrilled to welcome her back in this role.

Socratic Seminars are named for their embodiment of Socrates’ belief in the power of asking questions. Students take part in a formal discussion, based on a text, during which a leader asks open-ended questions. Students listen closely to the comments of others, think critically, share their own thoughts, and respond to the thoughts of others. They learn to work cooperatively and to question intelligently and civilly.

We look forward to many meaningful discussions in the coming school year!

Our middle school teaching team is complete, and what a team it is!

With a full middle school team of dedicated teachers who are passionate and knowledgeable in their fields, we know this year will be filled with meaningful learning, strong connections, memorable experiences, and plenty of fun.

Our teachers are looking forward to partnering with families to help students continue to grow academically, socially, and personally.

The middle school is divided into two classes. The River Room is for students in 5th & 6th grades while The Summit is made up of 7th & 8th grade students.

If you would like to learn more about our middle school program or take a tour, we would love to tell you more and show you around!
