This white oak has already dropped every acorn it produced and there’s not one left on the ground underneath it. The activity obviously slowed down immediately once the feed was gone. Nevertheless, it’s still been interesting to see that some deer will come back hoping the tree dropped some more. This tells me not to give up on a spot like this once the acorns are gone. There’s still at least a few days left of deer returning and checking on it. 🇺🇸🦌

The big boys have been heading back to bed right before sun pops up. This pattern might get worse before it gets better. Late October can’t get here soon enough! 🇺🇸🦌

It’s been a slow start to the season so far. Bucks have been very sluggish with their travels. If you are going to get one it’s probably happening the first or last hour of daylight. 🇺🇸🦌

Shortly before this buck visited this scrape, a doe and a fawn came and worked it. Does are the biggest key for bucks having the desire to re-visit scrapes. Even in early October. If you have does consistently hitting your scrapes right now, it won’t be long until the boys start showing up! 🇺🇸🦌

Another reason early season can be so challenging is that most browse sources are starting to lose protein levels. Since the springtime, deer have had it made with an abundance of quality browse. In areas with no acorns, deer are somewhat stunned with the lack of nourishing food sources. Some bucks start to roam in search of better habitat. I think other bucks just accept the fact and start moving even less to keep those fat reserves building for the rut. In the big woods, the fall season does not produce the cream of the crop in a lot of areas. The whitetail life starts to get hard. It seems like after September 25th, a lot of my better browsing areas shut right down with less deer activity. 🇺🇸🦌

The biggest buck in the area used the buck bed yesterday. Without much surprise, he didn’t get out of that bed until 7:15 pm. This is exactly why it is so hard to kill mature bucks on public land early in the season. Out of any of the bucks that have used this bed in the last several days, the latest to stay there was around 6:30 pm. If a buck isn’t leaving his last bed until sundown, he is darn near impossible to hunt! 🇺🇸🦌

My favorite place to set up in a thicket or a clear-cut is wherever it forms a corner. This particular spot is just that and it’s really been turning on lately. Bucks are going to spend more of their daytime hours these next couple of weeks in thick cover. Find where the two edges form a corner and it turns into the perfect travel corridor as bucks work their way out of the bedding area. Spots like this make great staging areas as the sun starts to set! 🇺🇸🦌

We’ve had multiple bucks come into the buck bed this morning. First buck to use the bed was a smaller 2.5 year old but then he got booted out by a nice 10-pointer. It seems like some of the younger bucks try to get to a certain bed before the older bucks but they stand no chance if a more dominant buck shows up. So far in the past 24 hours we’ve had three different bucks use this bed! 🇺🇸🦌

One thing I’ve done more this year than I ever have is placed cameras right inside of bedding areas. You hear a lot of hunters say “do not” do that. I think the key is to only put cell cams in there and that way you don’t have to go in and check the cards. I’ve seen very little insecurity from bucks passing by these cameras. For me, cell cameras are at their best when you can stay out of your hunting areas and still have the ability to observe 24/7.
