There are times when business contacts become more than professional connections. A friendship develops that eclipses any transaction. More than five years ago, Laurent Berp contacted me through the Alliance Francaise, regarding English language lessons. At that time, he and his family were newly arrived to the Philadelphia area from France as a result of a promotion. I found Laurent to be open, honest, funny and extremely intelligent but what struck me most was his ability to manage his very busy professional life and still be incredibly dedicated to his young family. After a rocky first year in the US, he and his family gradually adapted to their new lives in the US. Both of his kids speak fluent English and are involved in many school activities. Laurent and his wife Manon are quite comfortable with their second language as well. Over the years, I’ve met Laurent for lunch and have visited his home for dinners and other social occasions. Our lessons have covered topics ranging from French food to the NFL. In short, he has become a very good friend.
All things must pass, as George Harrison wrote, and last week, Laurent’s circumstances determined that he could no longer continue our English lessons. I will certainly miss our weekly lessons, but I am comforted by the fact that our friendship will endure. Merci pour les bon temps Laurent, and bonne chance pour l’avenir.
