One of the most important skills that students develop in Middle School Humanities is the ability to analyze and synthesize evidence to build an argument.

🕵️
On the first day of class, Humanities Instructor, Gwyneth Turner, guided her 7th and 8th grade students to put this skill into practice by investigating a “mystery crime”.

L E A R N I N G by D O I N G
Without knowing anything about the crime or the people involved, they worked in groups to examine three bags of evidence, each belonging to a different person connected to the crime. Starting with evidence from only one bag, they had to come up with an evidence-backed explanation of the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the mystery crime — iterating upon their theory as each successive bag introduced new information to either corroborate or challenge their initial hypotheses.

To what extent are the novels of today representative of a collective consciousness, or even a collective conscientiousness?

In this 3-Mod, Advanced Humanities: Contemporary Fiction reading intensive course, students will attempt to chart trends in contemporary fiction that transcend the boundaries of genre, form, and language.

We will analyze plot-driven pulp, serious literary works, and contemporary translations on our way to discovering just what exactly is at the heart of the novel these days. In keeping with the requirements of an 11th/12th grade core humanities course, this course will require significant reading, writing, and research.

There is an urgency to ground ourselves. A (almost entirely) analog weekend with Middle + Upper School leaders…

“Our students worked with great humor, and with great energy, and with great attention, but they worked hard. It’s a big ask, on their final weekend before the school year, to spend nearly 2 days in strategic planning mode.

It’s just continued and additional evidence of kind of people we get to work with and get to serve. What a gift this weekend really was…”

The poetry of a new school year.
🤍🌊

Middle and Upper School student leaders gathered this weekend to retreat, to strategically plan, to collaborate, to ideate, and to design the year ahead. We are a school that learns by doing. Our leadership program is a crucial piece of our culture and curriculum.

But underneath the unique and intentional structure of it all are human beings. People who honor, respect, enjoy and appreciate each other — welcoming opinions and context; challenging one other to live with integrity and sense of self; demanding that Stone grows and evolves with them; lighting up every space they enter.

These humans.
An afternoon in the ocean.
A weekend of hard, thoughtful work.

Stay tuned for their story.
