Inconsistently consistent.

Huh? Yep. Here me out...
I'm getting it done, when I can, however often as I can, without getting down on myself if I miss a workout here and there. Listening to my mind and body and giving it what it needs. Im making progress in the RIGHT areas - In how I feel and moving correctly, without joint pain/discomfort. Inconsistently consistent.

This run was one of my best since I started working out in the beginning of December, but it's not because of the time, it's the way I felt, STRONG! It was the first run I didn't feel like I had to really focus on my form and keeping my hips under my body. It was the first time I didn't have to stop, except for the occasional squirrel up a tree. I can't help myself. 🐿

I'm sharing because I told myself my focus would be to get some kind of movement in as often as I could and when I could. Whatever I did would be enough with my final goal to feel stronger and healthier both mentally and physically.

We are ALL too often extremely hard on ourselves and set unreasonable expectations and the disappointment of not reaching our goals stops us in our tracks. Guilty myself of this.

It's extremely hard for me to go easy when it comes to working out. And this journey back has been hard. Getting covid at the end of December took me out for over a week and back pain slowed my roll following it. I got into a dark place and felt like I had to crawl out, EVER. SO. SLOWLY. I hate going easy. I hate doing corrective exercises but i had to go back to basics. My back pain made me realize my body was not moving like it should anymore. I had to retrain my body to move correctly.

Getting through many of these workouts was a real struggle. All I wanted was a hard workout and the release you feel from that! But the payoff is that my back and knee pain has subsided and I've reconnected mind and body. The right muscles are firing when they should and the exercises FEEL GOOD.

That's what progress I'm most happy with and proud of, not my running time or my ability to finally do 10 pushups on the floor. I feel STRONG and IN CONTROL. Most importantly the greatest progress of all for me is that I've kept my habits despite the punches πŸ‘Š I've been thrown. For me, keeping this habit is my SANITY in this hard time of social deprivation. Yes even introverts get socially deprived! My family and working out are the only things keeping me sane right now.

My message to you. Go easy on yourself. Start small and stay inconsistently consistent. Meaning, whatever you get done is enough! Roll with the punches and stay strong.

Also if anyone wants to follow me on Strava I'd love to share our workouts whether you're walking, running, biking, etc. And share a thumbs up πŸ‘ to let each other know, I see you getting it done and kudos to you!

I've been wanting to sign up for the whole life challenge for a while but it is daunting thinking about working on all 7 of these habits at once when they currently all need a lot of work!

To make it easier on myself I'm going to add one habit each week beginning this Saturday, August 17th. The fall challenge starts, Saturday September 28th. I'm signing up now!

If anyone wants to join me in adding one habit per week and/or the challenge let me know! I could use an accountability buddy or two!

A few of our spoils from the crop share this week. Husk cherries, blackberries, tomatillos, tomatoes and flowers!

Aside from just feasting on husk cherries and blackberries, so far we've added blackberries to our oats. We had some fresh tomato and basil on a Turkey burger and we made our own verde salsa with tomatillos, peppers, and garlic from the farm. Leave a comment if you'd like the recipe!

I used to love cooking, and for a while now it has been a chore. However, I am tired of the struggle it's been and am trying to do better.

We joined a crop share this summer to help us mix things up and I've made it my goal lately to not let these veggies go to waste!

Last night, in efforts to not let these carrots go bad, I found a way to cook them up and it was a HUGE win! This recipe was too good not to share! It was also really simple to make.

I halved the recipe in the attached picture and used half of it to marinate and grill the pork chops. I boiled some water and blanched the carrots, drained the water and cooked them in the other half of the marinade with chopped onions and scapes (also from crop share) and added salt, pepper, fennel seed and mustard seed. Put the carrots over iceberg lettuce and it was amazing! Give it a try!

A little tweak goes a long way!

My tweak this morning was actually an uncomfortable tweak in my back as I let my knees turn inward during my squat. This tweak served as a reminder that a little (positive) tweak in your training form goes a long way. And a little (negative) tweak or slip in form can wreak havoc in a very quick way! My back is fine but it was definitely a reminder of the importance of good form.

Remember these 3 things while squatting and you'll improve your squat DRASTICALLY!
1. Keep your knees out wide through the ENTIRE movement.
2. Keep your arms parallel to the floor
3. Keep your lower spine neutral (aka tail tucked, aka glutes TIGHT)

Stay focused!
