Words cannot do justice to describe the beauty we saw on our outing today to the Bulb Show at the Smith College greenhouses.

The incredible scent of hyacinth, tulips, and daffodils of all kinds was so strong when we first stepped into the greenhouse it was as though we were entering another world! The children enjoyed stopping and smelling the flowers and needed a few reminders not to pick them which was so very tempting.

This week, Emlyn helped us make our own fancy masks!

We used paper plates cut in half with eye holes cut out and then decorated them with paint, glitter glue, sparkly beads and shiny ribbons and they sure turned out quite beautifully! We even attached a popsicle stick to one side so we could hold them up in front of our faces!

“The Very Hungry Caterpillar" (the Eric Carle classic) was the theme for our circle on Monday.

We talked about caterpillars, and how they have lots and lots of legs, but only one head and two eyes like us.

February is already here, and it sure has been a wintery week with some snow and very cold temperatures.

What fun the children had at the The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art!

After exploring the big bus, and pretending to go to school together on it we visited the very hungry caterpillar. We continued with our pretend trip to school and Jai was the teacher and she read a few books to us by Mo Willems which were funny stories.

Excerpts from this week's newsletter to Parents:

Dear Parents,

With this unseasonably warm weather it sure feels like Spring this week and maybe even Summer at times! We have enjoyed longer play times outside. We even had our first picnic snack and outside circles of the year earlier this week. The children are so happy to be without all their Winter gear! It's lovely to see them move about freely without the bulky snow suits and mittens etc. We appreciate you staying alert of the expected weather on the days your children come, so you can be sure to continue sending them with the appropriate outdoor gear. During the Spring months you can expect they will need rain gear at times and also sun hats on the warm sunny days. It may be sooner than later that we will be requesting to send in your preferred sunscreen if the warm sunshine continues.
Amar saw the first tick of the season on her leg the other day while taking out the compost. It looks like it's time to start the tick checks every night for your children to help prevent Lyme's disease.

Circle Time

On Monday it was time for Gymnastic circle with Jai! The children practiced their jumps and some of them even remembered how to do a tuck jump and a jump half turn. We reviewed the straddle and the pike jump as well. We pulled out the gymnastic mat, the big green gym ball and the trampoline. We worked on good form in our forward rolls, practiced our backwards rolls and even our big leaps.
In other circles this week we stayed outside for animal games and an obstacle course with Emlyn. The course offered obstacles where children had to balance while walking along the edge of the sandbox and hold tight to the rope while swinging. Alison led outside circles on Tuesday and Thursday. The children loved the make believe adventure they had when they got in the big boat and paddled all the way down the river to Florida to visit Ravi! When they got there they decided to take part in the river jumping competition that was happening. It was the widest river they had ever seen (there were two long sticks outlining the borders of the river.) All the children were brave and tried jumping across. Many landed in the river and got all wet :) but a few of the older children actually made it all the way to other side! Another day with Alison the children enjoyed more imaginative story play. Alison decided she wanted to pop some popcorn and the children became the kernels and pretended to pop, pop, pop until the little house was so full of popcorn that they came tumbling out. This play was inspired by the story they all know called “The Magic Porridge Pot.”
Today Amar is taking the children on a yoga adventure to Mexico where they will meet a Mexican boy named Juan. The children had to hold their airplane yoga pose a long time to get all the way to Mexico and then again to get home at the end! We learned that Juan knows how to catch Iguanas and he helps his family to catch them. They can sell them in the market because in Mexico some people eat Iguanas! While we were in Mexico, we even had the treat of dancing to beautiful authentic Spanish guitar music that Tom played for us.

Nature Lessons

It was such a joyful moment when the nature lesson crew found the first crocus' in Amar's garden! After digging up an early garlic bulb, everyone tried a piece once it was cleaned. We did lots of tree climbing in the dogwood tree before we found out that it is a very delicate tree and we should not go into the herb garden circle (oops)! We did some exploring under the Grandfather trees too. We popped popcorn after we took the kernels off the cobs ourselves. Then we spread the popcorn around the Grandfather trees hoping to attract the birds. There were lots of bluejays around. We found many feathers from a female cardinal and we even found a beak! We talked about what could have happened, what animal could be hunting under those trees.......

In the Kitchen

We have enjoyed some Italian inspired delights in our meals this week. We had delicious raw red pepper marinara pizza and today we will be having eggplant pizza crackers. Both “baked” in the dehydrator to warm deliciousness at 108 degrees or lower to keep the enzymes intact, for optimum nutritional benefit!
