Sustainability Fellows Sarah and Ari recently installed two wood duck boxes in the upper area of Fishermans Creek to support local wildlife.

Wood ducks are a one of North America's most colorful migratory waterfowl and love habitats like They live in bottomland forests, wooded lakes, rivers, swamps, and streams, making Fishermans creek a great home.

Here's the catch, wood ducks cannot make their own nesting cavities. Instead, they rely on abandoned woodpecker holes or...wood duck boxes!

Keep an eye out for them in the creek over the spring and summer! 🦆

June is National Pollinator Month! 🐝💛
Established by the USDA and U.S. Senate in 2007 as national pollinator week and later national pollinator month, is an annual campaign dedicated to celebrating and protecting the bees, butterflies, birds, and other pollinators that sustain our ecosystem and feed supply. 🦋

What can you do?
Plant native habitat! 🌱
Avoid pesticides
Provide water sources for pollinators to utilize!

The bee hotels at Kate Farm are just one example of a pollinator project you can do at home! They were made by student volunteers under the leadership of Kate Farm Interns and Sustainability Club members and installed with the help of students in the Natural Resources program at the James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center (Leonardtown High School).

Following the townhouse compost pilot in the Spring of 2026, we have started the plot process for the study: Making the Most of Compost.

With the help of Kate Farm summer interns, Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission interns, Dr. Muchnick, Dr. Wilfong, and Sustainability Fellows Ari and Sarah, we measured, mowed, tilled, raked, and prepped 6 plots for our study.

We will be planting cover crops, monitoring, and calculating the crop yield (how much product we are growing) from the plots. Check back during the beginning of the semester to be involved!

Kate Farm summer interns and the Sustainability Fellow attended the SAV Watchers training that took place at Jug Bay Wetland Sanctuary in Anne Arundel County. 🌿🫧🐠

The Chesapeake Bay SAV Watchers is a program that provides volunteer scientists an engaging and educational experience with submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) while generating useful data for Bay scientists and managers.

SAV - also known as underwater grass - plays an ESSENTIAL role in the Bay ecosystem and provides us with many ecosystem services. It is important to monitor SAV as it is an indicator species for overall Chesapeake Bay health because it is sensitive to positive and negative changes in water quality.

SAV is present in our very own St. Mary’s River! If you are interested in becoming a Chesapeake Bay SAV Watcher or want to learn more about SAV, check out the Chesapeake Monitoring Cooperative, MD DNR, NOAA, and Chesapeake Bay Program websites. Contact [email protected] for information pertaining to training.
