How can a plant survive without water?

Desert spikemoss (Selaginella lepidophylla) is built for life in the dry Chihuahuan Desert.

When water becomes scarce, it curls up, dries out, and enters a dormant state. Its metabolism slows dramatically, helping protect its cells from damage.

When rain finally returns, it can absorb water, unfold its leaves, and resume normal activity.

This ability to survive extreme dehydration is called desiccation tolerance.

It doesn’t really “come back from the dead.” It was waiting for water.

🌱 Nature has some incredible survival tricks.

Can a banana really glow?
A ripe Cavendish banana can show a bright blue fluorescence under ultraviolet (UV) light.
As the banana ripens, chlorophyll in the peel breaks down and fluorescent compounds accumulate. Early research linked the blue glow to fluorescent chlorophyll breakdown products. Later research found that phenolic compounds in the cell walls also play an important role in the fluorescence.
The glow is strongest in yellow, ripe bananas. Green bananas show much less blue fluorescence.
So the next time you see a ripe banana, imagine what it might look like under a UV light.
Same banana. Secret blue glow.
