We're taking a moment to address what happened at this evening's Hibriten High School chorus concert at Lenoir Presbyterian Church, and to let you know that everyone is safe.
Before the concert began, two Hibriten students noticed two young men displaying what appeared to be handguns. They alerted an adult and law enforcement right away. Lenoir Police Department responded quickly. Officers detained and searched the two young men and found they were carrying BB pistols made to look like real guns. Neither of them is a Hibriten student. No one was hurt, and the concert went on as planned.
You may have seen posts on social media tonight from people who weren't there and have no connection to Hibriten. Some of those posts have made this sound like something it wasn't. Don’t let them define what really happened. What really happened is that two Hibriten students had the courage to speak up, our local law enforcement responded quickly, and Hibriten chorus students went on stage and sang. That’s our Hibriten.
We know this comes at a hard time. Many of you, and many of our students, are still unsettled after the recent shooting at a party some Hibriten students attended. Hearing about another concern so soon can bring those feelings back. If a student is worried or having a hard time, school counselors are available to talk.
We especially want to commend the two students who spoke up tonight. They saw something that didn't look right, and they acted quickly. That took courage and good judgment, and it's exactly what we hope every student will do. We're proud of them. We're proud of the Hibriten chorus students who stayed calm and gave a wonderful performance. And we’re grateful to Lenoir PD for their quick response.
Please take a few minutes this week to talk with your student. Remind them that if they see or hear something that worries them at school, at an event, or anywhere else, they should tell a trusted adult. They will never be in trouble for reporting a concern.
