My daughter Molly stepped out of her comfort zone today and played her first piece in front of an audience of family. So proud of her! And proud of all my beginner violinists who worked hard to learn some Christmas music this season to share with their families. It’s not easy stepping out to play in front of people, especially for a solo performance. I am looking forward to a New Year of lessons and hope to help each student reach the next level in their playing journey. Merry Christmas!

Itzhak Perlman making the violin 🎻 sing like it’s as easy as breathing. I highly encourage everyone, especially violin students, to spend time each day listening to violin music. It doesn’t have to be classical. Jazz, fiddling, classical, jam sessions, bluegrass, country, all of it is excellent for our minds and our future music playing and music reading. It is amazing what the brain holds onto and I know not a second of good listening is waisted.

Let’s talk about violin sizing. This is my five year old with a full size, 4/4 violin. He was so excited to hold his sister’s violin but it was clearly way too big!

I have several asking about lessons for younger children. I figured I would make a public post explaining why I had set the age limit at 10 and up.

Honestly, any child who isn’t finished growing and under the age of 12 years should be measured from neck to mid palm to determine what size violin they should begin with. There are five violin sizes to accommodate for growing children. 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and 4/4
Many can use a full size by age 10.
If a violin is too large a child will not be able to play properly. I am happy to help with determining size or you can look up how to measure online.

The second factor involved with teaching very young children is their maturity and attention. For children up to 10 I would request a parent be present with the child for two reasons. A parent will need to see what their child is learning to help them practice and to assist in keeping your child on task. With children 7-9 we may determine that extra parental involvement isn’t needed but it would be determined after a few lessons.

I am happy to discuss younger student if anyone is disappointed by the age limit. Children under the age of 10 typically require smaller instruments and more parental involvement.
