What Current Match Rates Tell Us About Future Matching Success

I will admit that my wife and I have speculated on whether a certain birth family will match to their lost child when they contact us. Which orphanage would the child have been sent to? When was the child born? We make our assessments of success based on intuitive metrics based on our experiences over the past twelve years. But it is just that: Intuition. So, I thought it might be interesting to put some data to the intuition, and see if what we expect matches reality.

The answers surprised even us.

We want to remind families and adoptees from the Hunan scandal orphanages that we have orphanage records detailing important information for many adoptees. These are payment receipts and logs that detail true information as to who brought the child into the orphanage, where they were born, etc.

I am always stunned by the powerlessness of many birth families when pressured by paternal grandparents to relinquish a female child. Today’s match is to an adoptee whose paternal grandfather took it upon himself to take her from her birth family and bring her to the orphanage. Needless to say, the birth parents have been searching ever since.

One major underappreciated source of information for an adoptee is their foster family. These families often have photos, history, and birth family information. We have the foster family contact information for thousands of adoptees.

Check our lists and see if your name is there. If so, email for pricing.

Attention families and adoptees in the New York City area: Barbara Demick will be speaking at the Strand Bookstore tomorrow. I am reading the book currently, and all I can say that it is an exquisite read -- very informative, very well articulated. If you want to learn about "old China" and understand the pressures and challenges of birth families, read this book. The story is riveting.

I will be reviewing it when I am done, but if you have a chance to see her tomorrow, grab it. Adoptees are free to come.
