If you are a parent or caregiver of someone with a disability, don’t stay up at night wondering!

You can start by simply getting what’s in your head out of your head and into a plan. At CaringTide, we help families look at the bigger picture and identify the pieces that may need attention, not because you aren’t doing enough, but because you’ve been doing so much.

If you’ve ever thought, “I know what my child needs, but I’m not sure anyone else would know,” we’d love to help you think through what comes next. We’ll help you identify the next step.

You are irreplaceable. Your knowledge is too important to stay only in your head.

Most parents of a child with a disability have a plan for the big things.

A will.
A Special Needs Trust.
Maybe guardianship.
Maybe an ABLE account.
But what about tomorrow?
What would happen if you were suddenly in the hospital for two weeks?

Who would know:
What medications your child takes?
What they eat and what they won’t eat?
How they communicate?
Who to call at school or their day program?
What benefits they receive?
When their waiver paperwork is due?
What doctors they see?
What calms them down when they’re overwhelmed?
Where important documents are kept?
What decisions need to be made if you aren’t available?

No one knows your child quite like you do.
You know what works. You know what doesn’t.
You know how your child communicates, what makes them comfortable, who they trust, what they need when they’re overwhelmed, and the little details that might not be written down anywhere. That knowledge is part of what makes your role as a parent so important. No plan can replace you. But a good plan can help someone else step in when you can’t.

How Services Work -
The LEA where the private school is located is responsible for providing services. Students may have to go to a public school site for services. Equitable services are not guaranteed and often limited due to funding constraints.

Requesting Services -
Contact the LEA where the private school is located and request an evaluation under Child Find. If eligible, the district will create a Service Plan. Keep a record of services provided and maintain regular communication with the LEA.

Key Takeaways -
Your child has the right to be evaluated, even if enrolled in a private school. Services may be limited or unavailable — funding is a major constraint in many states for example Texas. Families should advocate and document requests, but plan realistically.
