This post surrounds the discussion of the United States of America's flag.

The American Flag means different things to different people.
For many it is a symbol of freedom and liberty to which Americans
pledge allegiance…for our nation and its shared history, pride,
principles, and commitment of its people. Properly displaying this
powerful symbol, attests to our respect for everything it represents.

In the Charlottesville Racist Riots, there were Racist Groups waving the
American Flag.
During the January 2021 insurgency, the American Flag was used to
break into the White House (our most sacred home of Democracy).
During the January 2021 insurgency, the American Flag was used to
beat policemen.
In my home town of Abbeville South Carolina, the Ku Klux Klan waved
the United States Flag.
You rarely if ever hear anyone complain about these “anti-people of
color, anti-Black, anti-immigrant, anti-Asian/Pacific Islander, anti-Semitic
and anti-Muslim” groups’ misuse of the symbolic flag. Sure, people are
arrested and being prosecuted for their behavior and crimes committed,
but not, to my knowledge, for misuse of the flag.

Yet, when Athletes took a knee to the flag, there was public outcry.

So, is the American Flag a symbol of Racism?
It cannot be argued that the United States has a racist past; it is
embedded systemically in our United States history and continually
affecting our social and economic systems. “African Americans are still
economically, socially and politically marginalized”. The United States

has a history of racism which is present and real today; if the United
States Flag represents the United States, then…..
Jane Elliott put it very clearly, “We live in the land of the free and the
home of the brave: white people are the free and people of color have to
be brave.
It amazes me how when a white person offends the core of America, it
somehow is not as big of a deal as when a Black person or person of
color does likewise.
We have a double standard.
Say what you mean and mean what you say. If the US flag is for that
which is good, our inalienable rights, democracy, and freedom then also,
let us own that the flag also can represent the systemic racism that is,
too, a part of America.
Some people fear seeing that flag being waved by racist groups. That is
a fair reality as well as a fair statement.

This beautiful child is 14 year old George Junius Stinney Jr.

77 years ago yesterday on June 16, 1944, George was executed in South Carolina by electric chair. An all white male jury convicted him of murder without any evidence, without any legal representation, and without any deliberation. They took 10 minutes to return a guilty verdict. His parents were denied the right to see him as he sat in prison, alone, for 81 days.

He was executed at 7:30pm on June 16, 1944. It wasn't until 70 years later in 2014 that his conviction was post-humously overturned.

None of the corrupt people who killed George were ever held accountable for their crime.

As you reflect over this, think about whether we have advanced as a nation? In 2014, 12 year old Tamir Rice was executed by police and not one person was held accountable. Tamir Rice would have graduated in the class of 2020. George Stinney might still have been alive today.

Have we advanced as a country?
