This little guy is learning how to stand. He falls a lot.

It's crazy everything our body does to balance and walk.

You need awareness, focus, adaptability, and strength.

It's the same in our families and work.

Awareness - Just like our body's sensory feedback, our partner's stress or kids' behavior can give us insights into our family's emotional climate.

Focus - Children learn to focus on where they want to go to stay balanced. Focusing on our family's needs amidst work chaos can keep our priorities aligned.

Adaptability - Dynamic balance occurs when you move. Truth is, our family's situation is always changing. Kids grow older, school gets out, and cycles of up and down at work. Got to stay mentally flexible. We often need to revisit and revise routines, schedules, and assumptions about our spouses and kids.

Strength - Kids have to develop their core to move their limbs to balance. Likewise, we have to ensure our core needs (emotional, physical, spiritual, social) are met in order to balance our responsibilities.

Most of all....falling down is part of the learning process. Don't think I've ever seen a parent yell or scold their 1 YO for falling down. Maybe we should have some more grace for ourselves and others too.

Balancing work and family isn't about balancing time.

Truth is, you'll always spend more time asleep and at work than you ever will with your family.

But if it's not about time, then what is it about?

I would suggest that just as in business, balance is about managing your family's assets and liabilities in relation to your family's purpose.

The ‘assets’ in this context are actions that foster connection and support within the family. Other examples are communication, service, support, sacrifice, and being physically or emotionally present.

Liabilities are not negative but are essential investments like work or regenerative hobbies, which, while taking time away from family, provide the means for growth and stability.

The key is not to equate balance with equal time but with meaningful contributions aligned with your family's purpose and vision.

It's when I lose sight of my family's purpose and vision that I find myself squandering our resources and losing balance.

Would love to hear from everyone how they balance their personal and professional lives with their family's purpose!
