SURVIVAL DAY at Vernon Middle School!
What happens when youโre suddenly faced with the challenge of surviving in the wilderness? Our 6th grade ELA students got to experience that question firsthand during Survival Day, inspired by the novel Hatchet by Gary Paulsen! ๐๐ฒ
Just like Bryan, the main character, who must rely on his knowledge, resourcefulness, and survival skills after a plane crash leaves him stranded in the North Canadian woods, our students participated in activities designed to help them understand what it takes to survive in an unexpected situation.
Throughout the day, students explored different survival techniques, problem-solving challenges, and hands-on activities that connected directly to Bryanโs experiences in the novel. They had the opportunity to think critically, work together, make decisions, and discover how certain choices can either aid or hinder their chances of survival.
๐โก๏ธ๐ฒ From the pages of Hatchet to real-world survival skills, our students learned that sometimes survival is all about preparation, perseverance, teamwork, and making the right choice!
A huge shoutout to our amazing ELA teachers for turning literature into an experience our students could see, feel, and learn from!
