HAPPY TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK 2020
Thank you to our truly amazing teachers at Harper Park!

05/07/2020

Congrats to Lynne Avedellas! A true Inspiration to all!

Teacher Appreciation Week 2020 is one unlike any other. Loudoun County Public Schools Teachers are not in their classrooms right now, yet their contributions to our community have never been more important. Their virtual work to provide continuity of learning and social-emotional support for students is helping families through one of the most challenging times in our nation’s history. We invite families to email their teachers this week with messages of encouragement and thanks.

For the fifth year, the Virginia Lottery is encouraging students, parents and the general public to send thank-you notes to Virginia's deserving public school teachers during National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4 – 8. With both students and teachers working hard from home, now's your chance to send a digital thank-you note to show your appreciation. Your favorite teacher could win a Virginia vacation and prizes for your school! Visit https://thankateacherva.com/ to participate.

Recognition for this year’s Loudoun County Teacher of the Year nominees has been postponed due to COVID-19, so we are using Teacher Appreciation Week to highlight the outstanding work done by these nominees.

Denise Higgins, Pinebrook, Librarian
“Denise Higgins is the living definition of service leadership. She is the heartbeat of Pinebrook Elementary as she cares deeply for each person in our building – holding to excellence in academics and character equally. Denise’s positive attitude, can-do effort, and finding the good in any situation makes her a staff member that exhibits the very best that we wish for our students.”—Paul Thiessen, Principal

Kelley McNamee, Eagle Ridge, Music Teacher
“Kelley McNamee, Eagle Ridge Middle School Band Director, is our nominee for teacher of the year. Kelley was nominated by multiple parents for her dedication not only to her students, but all music students at Eagle Ridge and Briar Woods High School in her role as our Music Subject Area Lead Teacher and for her contributions to the BWHS Marching Band. In addition to multiple recognitions for the ERMS Band program and individual students, Mrs. McNamee, along with Mr. Matthew Pazanowski, has built an award winning Jazz Band at Eagle Ridge. Kelley puts everything she has into every class, and is that rare combination of both patience and push for her students – she fully understands their developmental level as middle school musicians, but continually pushes them to excel beyond it. We at Eagle Ridge are awfully proud of Mrs. McNamee and, under her leadership, the excellence of all of our music programs. Congratulations Kelley!”—Scott Phillips, Principal

Susan Simmons, Little River Elementary School, Fourth Grade Teacher
“Ms. Simmons has served as the team leader for 4th grade for several years, the social sciences contact for the school, the resource contact for inclusive classrooms, the lead mentor for the building, and finally, as a valued member of our school community attending almost every community event. She smiles through tough conversations, holds fast to the educational principles being presented that are based on data, and comforts parents as they work together to support the student. Ms. Simmons has a genuine and honest approach with families, ensuring they know she cares and truly understands. Ms. Simmons is consistently student focused – dedicated to doing ‘whatever it takes’ to best assist, support, and encourage all of her students. Just recently, Ms. Simmons took it upon herself to ensure one student was fully able to participate in the school’s Geography Bee. The student’s specific needs made him frozen with fear over the large space, especially filled with many people. So, she utilized all of her resources to make certain this student was comfortable and had various options and accommodations. She even used her lunch time to help him practice on stage to not become overwhelmed by the large space or a large group of people. Without her efforts, he would have not been successful at participating fully during this event or as successfully!”—Kevin Murphy, Principal

Lynne Avdellas, Harper Park Middle School, Social Science and Global Studies Teacher
“What makes Lynne Avdellas an outstanding teacher? Lynne is a student advocate. She works tirelessly to provide a safe, inclusive and caring environment for all students. Lynne is a champion for personalized learning at Harper Park. She is adept at leveraging technology to cultivate 21st century learners. Lynne is a lifelong learner who enthusiastically shares her passion for the history of the United States with her students and colleagues. Above all, Lynne possesses a servant heart that propels her towards ensuring successful outcomes for all the Harper Park community!”—Mary Beth Woodford, Assistant Principal

Melissa Anderson, Sanders Corner Elementary School, Fifth Grade Teacher
”Mrs. Anderson has a unique method of motivating her students. She holds them accountable for their work, while at the same time recognizing the pride that they take in reaching their goals. She works in tandem with her grade level team members, special education teachers, teacher assistants, specialist teachers, and administration to implement and design an effective instructional program for her students. She considers many people to be a partner in each child’s educational process. She understands that even with the maximum amount of data, her children cannot learn unless she works to foster positive relationships with her students.”—Michael Jacques, Principal

Annabelle Mills, Stone Hill Middle School, Music Teacher
“To put it plainly, Annabelle is simply magical. Her ability to connect with students and to inspire their creativity and passions is profound and deeply impactful. Mention her name to any of her students and you will immediately see the sparkle in their eyes that comes from the love and respect they have for her. ‘Where words fail, music speaks, all thanks to Mrs. Mills,’ wrote a parent, whose son is in her Adaptive Music classroom. This pilot program was created and implemented by Mrs. Mills to extend her musical touch to every single student here at Stone Hill Middle School.”—Kathryn Clark, Principal

Jean Nibbelink, J.L. Simpson Middle School, Math Teacher
“Ms. Nibbelink is a wonderful teacher who inspires her students to develop a love for math even if it is not their best subject. She simplifies complex concepts for all students by breaking them down into their most basic form. Further, her warmness as a teacher provides students the comfort to ask for help when they need without feeling intimidated or scared. One parent wrote, “My daughter is a good student but finds math to be her most challenging subject. Having had Ms. Nibbelink to teach her algebra made a huge difference in her math confidence.” She does not have Ms. Nibbelink for Geometry this year. However, she still seeks Ms. Nibbelink’s help occasionally when certain challenging topics come up.”—Katrina Smith, Assistant Principal
