I’m looking forward to an exciting and adventurous school year where we will explore everything from the earth’s surface to George Washington’s first command as a general. To bring History Alive, we will collaborate through project-based and center-based learning activities. I thoroughly believe in the entire community approach to education and invite you (parents) to join us as we journey through America's early years. By donating your time, items needed for projects, or just a simple word of encouragement, you can help facilitate your involvement in our journey. This is my second year teaching summer school and honestly, the longest stretch I’ve ever done. And here’s the part that might surprise some folks: this year’s “summer learning” program was funded through a special grant to help students who need a little extra support ,but the grant didn’t cover lunch. I’m not even going to get started on how wild that is. Anyone who’s ever worked with students knows you can’t teach a hungry child. It just doesn’t work.

So I want to give a shout‑out to Ms.Herrin, social studies teacher at J.L Simpson. The minute she realized these kids weren’t going to have lunch, she didn’t complain, she didn’t wait, she got busy. She went out, talked to local businesses, and pulled together donations so our students could eat every day.

Because of her hustle and the generosity of Papa Johns Pizza and Paris Baguette, these kids have been eating well for the past two weeks. And let me tell you, it makes all the difference.

Ms. Herrin , thank you. Not just for being a great teacher, but for being a genuinely good human being. You saw a need, and you made sure our kids were fed while we teach them. This is what it’s all about! ✊🏾

Teachers leave every year, transferring, retiring, moving on. That’s part of education. But this year at Simpson feels different. We didn’t just lose coworkers; we lost people who helped shape this place and shaped me. I want to take a moment to honor two of the four who left a real mark on our school and on my life.

Mrs. Marnie Sloan Scassa has been at Simpson for 5 or 6 years, maybe more. As a fellow Texan, we always joked about who was heading home first, she finally beat me to it. Most people don’t know she’s actually an archaeologist, and every year she brought that passion straight into my classroom. Simpson is really going to miss her. (Her downside: she’s a TEXANS fan. Nobody roots for the TEXANS unless you’re from Houston. GO COWBOYS!)🤠

Mrs. Diana López has taught at Simpson for at least 18 years and is an incredible Spanish teacher. She actually started her career in Puerto Rico teaching social studies, and she’s been one of my closest friends in the building. She’s the reason I fell in love with Puerto Rico and visit three or four times a year. Simpson will feel her absence every day. Tuscarora, get ready. You’re getting one of the best Spanish teachers in the district.🇵🇷

Working with intramural sports at Simpson these last few years has been a real highlight. It let me see students outside the classroom, competing, leading, and even resolving conflicts on the court and field. It showed me a whole different side of them.

The four young men in this photo are students I’ve taught, but watching them play was something different. I’m grateful I got to experience that. If your child is thinking about trying sports, intramurals are a great way to start. It’s co-ed, non‑contact, and a safe way for kids to test the waters. If you’re interested for the fall, send me an email and I’ll explain how they can join….FYI, they came in second place in the district. ⚽️🥇🏆

It’s been two whole weeks since the kids left on the last day. I’m not gonna lie, I was READY for them to go. 😂But now here I am in sitting on my couch… missing them like I didn’t spend all of May/ June counting down. Hope they’re doing well and not terrorizing anybody’s summer program. See y’all in late August. ☀️😎

Man, I'm getting old. This year marks a decade at Simpson. Today I was reflecting on how many siblings I have taught. ...smh. (the little hair I have left is getting grayer)👴🏾
