Fairfield Dink Fest Brings Learning, Leadership, and Pickleball to Fairfield.

Fairfield’s 2026 Dink Fest Pickleball Tournament was a fantastic example of project-based learning (PBL) in action! Led by our 8th Grade PBL Math class, the event brought together 44 sixth-grade students who competed in a 22-team pickleball tournament.

Before hosting the tournament, the 8th-grade PBL students first had to learn the game of pickleball themselves. They then took on the role of teachers, introducing the sixth-grade students to the rules and skills needed to play. Once the tournament began, the 8th graders stepped into a variety of leadership roles, serving as official scorekeepers, referees, and line judges throughout the competition.

The project also incorporated real-world financial learning. Because the Dink Fest served as a fundraiser, the 8th-grade students met with the school treasurer and learned about the responsibilities involved in planning and conducting a fundraising event.

From learning a new sport to teaching younger students, managing tournament play, keeping accurate scores, making calls, communicating with participants, and helping organize a fundraiser, the 8th graders demonstrated strong leadership, teamwork, responsibility, communication, and problem-solving skills. The Dink Fest provided students with an opportunity to apply their math skills and classroom learning in an authentic, hands-on experience.

Congratulations to our 2026 Fairfield Dink Fest Champions, Deacon McKenzie and Beau Ryan!
