🌟 Employee Spotlight: Laura McEndoo – Occupational Therapist at East Allegheny School District 🌟

At Grade Point Resources, we’re proud to employ dedicated professionals like Laura McEndoo, a contracted Occupational Therapist at East Allegheny School District. Laura’s innovative approach to OT sessions combines structure with fun, creating an environment where students thrive.

To motivate and encourage, Laura uses a sticker reward system tied to a prize box. She says, “If students choose to be off task, the time is placed on its side until they are back on track. If they run out of time, they often miss the brain break they all love!” This small yet effective strategy helps students stay focused while working towards their favorite part of the session—the brain break! From playing Spot It to building with suction cups or using sensory items, the brain break activities are a fun and highly anticipated reward.

Another key aspect of Laura’s sessions is her creative use of visual schedules. Behind each task image is a colored card that corresponds to a timer, with each color representing a different time interval (2, 5, 5, and 10 minutes). Although Laura hasn't told the students about the timers' specific times, they love switching them from task to task. This small responsibility empowers students to stay engaged and adds a sense of ownership to their learning.

Laura’s thoughtful planning and positive reinforcement strategies not only help students meet their goals but also foster a supportive environment where respect and structure go hand-in-hand. Her approach reduces frustration and encourages students to take responsibility for their own progress, all while having fun!

Thank you, Laura, for the amazing work you do every day to support your students' growth and success! 👏🎉

At GPR, we are proud to support our dedicated team members who go above and beyond to create a positive and nurturing environment for students. One of our incredible Behavior Specialists, Ashley Santi, has been leading an initiative at three elementary schools in the Yough School District. In Ashley's program, teachers in grades K-2 are encouraged to give out “Spotted Being Kind” certificates to students who demonstrate kindness to their peers, teachers, and staff. These certificates are collected at the end of each month and proudly displayed in the school hallway. The students get to pick a prize from the prize box as a special reward! 🎁

In addition, each month during social skills lessons, two “Secret Stars” are chosen for their respectful behavior, attentiveness, and participation. These students also receive a certificate and a prize, along with a ticket to take home.

In addition to her work promoting kindness and respect, Ashley has created a Donor’s Choose project aimed at providing her students with a calming sensory room experience. This space will help students manage emotions and focus better, fostering a positive learning environment. We encourage anyone interested to support this wonderful project and help give these students the tools they need to succeed.

At GPR, we are continually inspired by the dedication of our school Behavior Specialists, who work tirelessly to help students overcome challenges and achieve success. One such example is Adam Santoro, a school Behavior Specialist at Shaler Area High School, who has developed an innovative and empowering program for Emotional Support students.

Adam’s program, called B.A.G. (Behavior, Attendance, and Grades), is designed to motivate students by focusing on these key areas. Each month, students who meet the criteria—maintaining positive behavior, attending school regularly, and keeping their grades up—earn the opportunity to participate in community-based learning projects. The idea is that these students can "give back" to their school and community, making a positive impact while learning valuable life skills.

Here’s how it works:

Students can’t have more than 3 behavior write-ups in a month.
They can’t be absent more than 3 days or tardy more than 6 times.
They must maintain passing grades (no F's).
The beauty of the B.A.G. program is that it gives students a fresh start every month, creating ongoing opportunities for growth and achievement. If a student does face a suspension, whether in-school or out-of-school, they would not qualify for that month’s incentive, but they can always work toward earning it the next month.

Adam has also made important community connections to further enrich the program. He has partnered with the Mayor of Etna and the Vice President of the Millvale Community Development Corporation, paving the way for even more opportunities for students to get involved and give back to their communities.

Adam shared:
"The goal is to create a cycle of positive reinforcement, where students can see the tangible rewards of their hard work and contributions. Community-based learning not only helps students feel more connected to their surroundings, but it also allows them to build real-world skills and relationships that will benefit them long after they graduate."

We’re so proud of Adam and all the incredible work he’s doing to support his students at Shaler Area High School. Keep up the amazing work! 🙌
