At GPR, we are continually inspired by the dedication of our school Behavior Specialists, who work tirelessly to help students overcome challenges and achieve success. One such example is Adam Santoro, a school Behavior Specialist at Shaler Area High School, who has developed an innovative and empowering program for Emotional Support students.
Adam’s program, called B.A.G. (Behavior, Attendance, and Grades), is designed to motivate students by focusing on these key areas. Each month, students who meet the criteria—maintaining positive behavior, attending school regularly, and keeping their grades up—earn the opportunity to participate in community-based learning projects. The idea is that these students can "give back" to their school and community, making a positive impact while learning valuable life skills.
Here’s how it works:
Students can’t have more than 3 behavior write-ups in a month.
They can’t be absent more than 3 days or tardy more than 6 times.
They must maintain passing grades (no F's).
The beauty of the B.A.G. program is that it gives students a fresh start every month, creating ongoing opportunities for growth and achievement. If a student does face a suspension, whether in-school or out-of-school, they would not qualify for that month’s incentive, but they can always work toward earning it the next month.
Adam has also made important community connections to further enrich the program. He has partnered with the Mayor of Etna and the Vice President of the Millvale Community Development Corporation, paving the way for even more opportunities for students to get involved and give back to their communities.
Adam shared:
"The goal is to create a cycle of positive reinforcement, where students can see the tangible rewards of their hard work and contributions. Community-based learning not only helps students feel more connected to their surroundings, but it also allows them to build real-world skills and relationships that will benefit them long after they graduate."
We’re so proud of Adam and all the incredible work he’s doing to support his students at Shaler Area High School. Keep up the amazing work! 🙌
