Who will be featuring in our next ? Why, one of our teachers, JT Cross, of course!

Q: What is your favorite pet’s name?
A: My cat, The Captain, is my favorite pet. She was born without her back right paw and so she has this cute little stump. My other cat, Cleopatra, is not very happy to hear about this but she is not a very nice person and therefore she lost.

Q: Favorite sound?
A: Rain. I grew up in a dry place, so I consider any rain a blessing.

Q: Favorite joke?
A: Two muffins are in an oven. The first one turns to the second one and says, “Boy, it sure is hot in here.” The second one says, “OMG, a talking muffin!!”

Q: Favorite T.V. channel?
A: Any channel showing Star Trek.

Q: What does your office (or workspace) look like?
A: A disaster zone. Until recently I had a desk and a tray table upon which I stacked mountains of papers and books. But when we got a new dining room table, I took the old one and put it in my office to act as a second desk . . . and now my desk, the old dining table, and the tray table are all stacked with mountains of papers and books.
The strangest part? I have all this paper and yet I don’t own a printer.

Q: If you could get a yacht what would you call it?
A: "I Should Be Paying More Taxes"

Q: What advice did you get that was the most rewarding?
A: To any teenager reading this, I wish someone had told me that all of the adults are making this up as they go along. I’m serious! There’s no guidebook they give you, no rule-book, no textbook, no nothing. Literally no one knows what they’re doing but we have to act like we do. It’s all made up, most of it is arbitrary, and often the things people cling onto the hardest are the most arbitrary.
What I’m saying is, you’ve got to make it up as you go along, too. That might sound scary, but trust me, it’s a blessing in disguise.

Time for another ! Today Stefan highlights a few different causes he supports related to our waters and maritime heritage:

"To say I champion something sounds like I make a fair amount of noise about it. The only thing I make much noise about is maritime heritage, which is where I focus most of my work. I've also been an active advocate for mass transit and bicycle infrastructure and underneath all of this is the topics that undergird everything we do, whether we like it or not, the environment, climate change, and human rights.

For the most part, I proselytize by example. I've only owned a car for a few months of my life--despite having lived in some fairly suburban and rural places. I walk and bike in all kinds of weather, and I've been told that people recognize me and the fact that I'm not using a car has given them the idea that they could too. In talking about the waterfront, I also talk about environmental issues. In NYC, the central waterfront environmental issue relates to our sewage system, which was designed with emergency overflows that regularly discharge raw sewage into our waterways when it rains. Ultimately, I want to help everyone remember that what we do, from fertilizing plants to discarding cigarette butts or flushing pharmaceuticals, all goes downstream in the end, into our riverine and marine waterways and comes back to haunt us.

I think we make the world what we want it to be by not accepting that it has to be otherwise and choosing, instead, to live the lives we want. This doesn't come without sacrifice or risk. Each of us has to decide how much we can tolerate and question that constantly.

I think the most important issues come down to treating people with respect for their humanity whether directly by our responses to impositions, inconsideration, or aggression or indirectly by the choices we make that perpetuate injustice against people financially, environmentally, or otherwise. Our waterways connect us like a physical embodiment of our relationships. We have to treat them with a consciousness for the people who share those waterways. What we cast adrift will float home again.

"Teachers Who Changed Us" - Lindsay Hirt

"The first teacher who truly changed me and made a lifetime lasting impression is instructor, author, and national champion canoe poling racer Harry Rock. When I was just seven years old, I was introduced to Harry in the deep woods of Bridgeton, Maine at Camp Winona, amidst a gathering of canoeing experts. My father Bill had enjoyed wilderness canoeing for many years and sensed my burgeoning love of nature. Thus despite my mother's better judgement, dad carted me off for my first of over twenty five annual weekends at the world famous Maine Canoe Symposium. When I first observed Harry balancing in a canoe on Moose Pond, he of course the tallest in the group and I the very shortest on the dock, I knew that it was possible to accomplish the seemingly impossible (even if I landed in the water a few times along the way). Although I did not go on to win every major American Canoe Association competition for over a decade like Harry did, he taught me many important skills over the years while poling on the water: techniques to get around in varying water conditions, the importance of physical strength, how to get out of a tight spot, thinking on one's feet, hand-eye coordination. He demonstrated that places that seem inaccessible aren't always so - use a pole to go UPstream! But above all, what stuck with me most is that Harry taught all of his students that they could have total independence if they chose, whether as a recreational canoeist or in life: all you need to do is "Stand tall and carry a big stick!"
Thank you, Harry. I'm still pushing the big stick!"
