Some lessons hit different when you draw them instead of just reading about them.

This little guy — Nqwebasaurus — is an early ancestor of the “ostrich mimic” dinosaurs, caught mid-evolution: still has teeth and a grabby hand his descendants would later lose. That’s the kind of detail that sticks when you’re the one putting pencil to paper.

🦴 Why does a paleontology class start with a pencil, not a textbook?
Drawing a fossil forces you to actually look at it — the proportions, the joints, what’s missing versus what’s inferred. That’s the same reasoning scientists use to reconstruct extinct animals, and it’s a faster way into evolutionary biology than memorizing a timeline.

🦴 Why we draw the thagomizer before we memorize the word.
This week in Visual Biology (Middle School), the standard is all about spotting anatomical similarities across species — so instead of starting with vocabulary, we start with a pencil. Here's a clip from a recent Stegosaurus session, where the tail spikes become the entry point into a bigger question: what does this animal's anatomy tell us about how it lived, and what it's related to?

🦖 A student asked why we're studying Godzilla in a history class. Here's the honest answer.
Kaiju films are a 70-year time capsule of the anxieties of the era that made them — nuclear fear in the 1950s, environmental collapse in the 2000s. Teaching Kaiju History means teaching students to read any pop culture artifact for what it's really saying about its moment.

🎨 Every concept I teach starts the same way: with a blank page, not a slide deck.
Before I explain a single term, I draw it — a cell, a food web, a mutation. Watching a structure build stroke by stroke shows students where the parts actually connect, in a way a bullet list never could. That's the premise behind every class I teach, from Visual Biology to the brand-new Visual Marine Biology launching this fall.
