With the new school year around the corner, the Veterans of Foreign Wars is once again holding an essay contest for students in graded 6 - 8 and grades 9 - 12. Through the Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy Essay contest, students compete for awards up to $5000 for Middle School and $35,000 for High School students. Completed applications and essays are due to the local VFW Post no later than October 31st. VFW Post 4608 will be accepting applications by email: [email protected] or from the guidance office at Ledyard and Groton middle and high schools. As Connecticut’s largest nonpartisan organization of municipal leaders, CCM represents 168 towns and cities across our state. We work every day to improve the life of residents, but to shape the future, we need to hear from the students.

The CCM Scholarship is a chance for students around the state to share their vision and make their voices heard by local leaders.

Contest Overview
Think about the question - What is cool about local government?

Create an entry using this as the central question and general theme. Have fun, and be creative with this project! You may choose to submit an essay, poem, photo, video, painting, multimedia project, or any other medium you find appropriate. Images of three-dimensional art will be accepted.

Helpful Tips
Here are some ideas to help you get started:

Do you know anyone who works in local government that you could speak to on the topic?
What excites you about your town?
What services do you like that your local government provides? (Club sports, theater, parks, fairs and festivals, parades, etc.)
What is your favorite place in your town?
What suggestions do you have to make your government cooler?
What services do you wish your town provided?

💛 Honoring Mr. Van Frachen

Today, LEAF pauses to honor the life and legacy of Mr. Van Frachen, a beloved educator whose impact reached far beyond the classroom. We are deeply saddened to learn of his passing, and our hearts are with his family, colleagues, and all who were shaped by his kindness and dedication.

Mr. Van Frachen was a teacher who inspired not just through instruction, but through presence — steady, thoughtful, and wholeheartedly committed to his students. His work was recognized often in our Teacher Recognition Program, including this year, a reflection of how consistently he uplifted the Ledyard community.

We remain profoundly grateful for all he gave to our schools and our children. His legacy lives on in every student he encouraged, every colleague he supported, and every moment he chose to lead with compassion.

May his memory be a blessing.
