Upper school biology students studied the permeability in cells. The experiment they performed to better understand this process uses a plastic bag filled with cornstarch and water placed inside a container holding iodine and water. The iodine molecules are small enough to pass through the plastic, while the cornstarch molecules cannot. This activity highlights the selective permeability of cell membranes, which allow only certain molecules to pass in and out.
