Society has it all backwards. Your child growing up to become a doctor or lawyer or becoming an Olympic athlete doesn’t automatically make you a “good” parent. Does your grown child *want* to talk to you? Or is it obligation? Can your grown child be their authentic self around you, or do they need to wear a mask to keep the peace?

Shout out to the parents who are raising securely attached kids who will likely desire to have a relationship with you that lasts a lifetime.

👉Just a gentle reminder that our ability to do these things (consistently, not perfectly) doesn’t just happen overnight.

🚗It’s a journey of unlearning and re-learning ways of relating to ourselves, our kids, and our inner kids.

🌺So, please be gentle with yourself.

I know it might feel impossible, but as much as you possibly can reduce demands during the back-to-school weeks, everything will go so much easier and smoother and better and more connected.

If you're looking for permission, this is me, your friendly neighborhood professional, giving you permission.

Whatever for dinner? Sure. Sleep in your school clothes? Why not. Skip bath, skip brushing teeth, skip brushing hair? They'll be fine. Their brains are exploding with all the new things they're having to handle. Haven't you ever felt like if you had to talk to *one more person* or handle *one more demand* then you were gonna blow up and scream at somebody or burst into tears or crawl into bed for three hours?

Don't extrapolate from this time period out to their whole lives or even to the whole year or the whole month. Don't do it! (I'm telling myself this every day and sometimes every hour right now.) Everything is exploding right now and soon it will stop exploding. Their brain will learn, or remember, how to handle this high of a level of demand. They will adjust. They will get past it and so will you. Right now, throw grace around like it's confetti. Hang in there. You got this. ❤

"After-school restraint collapse is real. And it might have you feeling like a screaming monster jumped off the school bus.

--But look closer. It's just a little person who's been juggling endless expectations in a complex environment all day. And they just reached their safe place."
End description.]

Brain Stores Multiple Copies of Single Memory

Recent research has uncovered how the brain stores and adapts memories over time.

In the hippocampus, memories of a single event are stored in multiple copies across different groups of neurons, which emerge at various stages of development.

These memory copies have different strengths and lifespans, with some fading quickly and others becoming stronger with time.

This dynamic storage system allows memories to be modified or reinforced depending on when they are recalled, offering insights into the brain’s ability to adapt and optimize decision-making based on past experiences.

UPDATE: Luckily these storms are weakening and no longer look to have a severe threat tonight. More storms are expected on Friday around midday into the afternoon, and some of them could become severe with damaging straight-line winds possible.

__________

Heads up! Storms headed this way from western KY. They will likely make it here, but their intensity is still in question once they arrive.

They DO have a history of producing damaging winds!

Please be sure to leave your phone turned on and up as you head to bed in case you go under a warning.
