The WesternU Lebanon Fire Emergency Alliance (WLEA) program is an active partnership between WesternU HCOM and the Lebanon Fire District (LFD) where medical students work alongside career and volunteer fire personnel on medical/fire calls, emergency response, participate and lead training drills, emotional support personnel with FireCorps, among other duties.

"Volunteering in the WLEA program has been such a rewarding experience to give back to the local community and learn from our amazing first responders at the Lebanon Fire District and strengthening the ties between pre-hospital and in-hospital care. A few of us WLEA members are currently in the NFPA Support Person Academy as pictured above to expand our volunteer role and scope within the LFD when responding to active fires and first alarm incidents. Excited to keep learning, serving, and growing with this team!"

The OPSO 2026 Northwest CME Conference took place Oct 2-4 in Portland and the WesternU team represented amazingly. Whether it was the CME conference, research presentations, residency fair or Oregon Osteopathic Foundation and Northwest Osteopathic Foundation Future Healers Gala, members of the HCOM community were involved and having a great time.

The 2026 Health Care Equity Fair took place on Sunday, October 4 in Pioneer Courthouse Square and a team of doctors and medicals students from HCOM were a part of the larger team hosting the event. WesternU HCOM joined the OHSU School of Medicine, Oregon Food Bank, University of Western States and many other organizations to offer free health screenings, vaccines, hair cutting, needle exchange and much more. A great job to all of those who volunteered to host this amazing annual event.

Three WesternU HCOM clubs joined together, APAMSA (Asian-Pacific American Medical Student Association), CAC (Cultural Awareness Club), LMSA (Latino Medical Student Association) to host the fall multicultural potluck event. It welcomed the incoming students and celebrated the second years' most recent exam!

The event aimed to create a sense of home and community for students while celebrating and sharing the diverse cultures through delicious homemade foods and snacks. Students were able to enjoy foods such as kimchi fried rice, sushi bake, salsa and chips, dumplings, Japanese terimayo hot dogs, larb salad, home baked cookies, and much more.

Last week two second year medical students, Caroline Carswell and Olivia Rodgers, worked with COSGP (Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents) and AACOM (American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine) to hold Advocacy Day for HCOM. This was a two day event centered around meeting with Oregon legislators to advocate for two upcoming bills that relate to medical students and residents.

As a result of this event, these students were able to experience being the experts in the room, as medical students navigating the clerkship/residency journey, while advocating for their community. This practice will serve them well as they continue to pursue advocacy and become physicians well-equipped for supporting their patients, both inside and out of the clinic.
