Some people have shared that they found this post offensive. We appreciate that feedback and want to clarify what we meant.

As an organization representing retired educators, we hear from retirees every day who are concerned about the rising cost of living and what it means for their children and grandchildren.

Our message was never that grandparents shouldn’t enjoy helping with their grandchildren. Many do, and they treasure that time together.

Our concern is that quality child care has become so expensive that many working families have fewer and fewer affordable options. Retirement should give grandparents the freedom to help because they want to, not because soaring costs leave their families with no practical alternative.

If Amendment 5 passes and sales taxes are expanded to services like child care, those costs could increase even more. That’s the issue we believe deserves attention.

Our June Retired Teachers “picnic/potluck” was a wonderful time of fellowship, good food, and informative presentations. We were delighted to welcome special guests, including new retirees, members from the Wright County Unit, and local school administrators.

We also heard from several distinguished speakers, including MRTA Executive Director Maria Walden, State Representative and incumbent Bennie Cook, and Democratic Representative candidate Marsha Snodgrass.

Texas County Library Director Louise Beasley and Children’s Librarian Tiffany Davy shared an exciting opportunity for our members to serve as reading mentors for elementary students during the upcoming school year.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this gathering both enjoyable and meaningful!

What an interesting and informative meeting! We were honored to have special guest speaker Cindy Roach from South Central Correctional Center share about the Restorative Justice Program and “The Quilters” from SCCC featured on Netflix. It was inspiring to learn how lives are being impacted through compassion, service, and second chances. Thank you, Cindy, for a wonderful presentation!
