The teachers have been busy all week preparing their classrooms and campus for our students to return!

To wrap up our Teacher Work Week, we gathered for a Family Social on the playgrounds, where children had the opportunity to visit their new classrooms, explore their spaces, and reconnect with friends and teachers. It was so wonderful to see both new and returning faces throughout our Acorn community! 🤍

A big thank you to all of our faculty, administration, and teachers who worked so hard to prepare our campus and classrooms for the year ahead. We are so excited to welcome all of our returning friends and new families back to Acorn Montessori!

Following the child is one of the most foundational principles of Montessori education, yet it is often misunderstood as letting children do whatever they want.

In a prepared Montessori environment, following the child means something entirely different:

Scientific Observation: Teachers deeply observe each child to discover their current developmental needs, interests, and strengths.

The Prepared Environment: Based on those observations, the adult intentionally prepares the classroom with specific materials designed to meet the child’s exact stage of growth.

Freedom Within Limits: The child is given the freedom to choose their own purposeful work and move at their own pace, within a structured framework of respect for themselves, their peers, and their community.

When we truly follow the child, we do not abandon boundaries. Instead, we remove the obstacles to their natural development, allowing them to build deep concentration, independence, and a lifelong love for learning.

Elementary had language and math camp this week in preparation for the school year! So many laughs and smiles in the classroom ✨ swipe to the end for some wisdom for your day 🤍It’s the little things in the classroom that make you smile each and every day. Each student is filled with such wisdom, curiosity, and worldly perspectives, reminding us just how much there is to learn from one another.✨

From the thoughtful conversations and unexpected questions to the small moments of kindness, problem-solving, and discoveries made throughout the day, these are the moments that make our classroom so special. Watching each child grow into their own unique person, follow their interests, and develop a love for learning is truly one of the greatest joys of being a Montessori guide. 🌱🤍

As we prepare our campus and classrooms for the upcoming school year, we want to remind our community of our upcoming transition dates for September:

* September 3: Orientation for students new to their program or new to our school.
* September 7: School Closed for all programs in observance of Labor Day.
* September 8: First day of the Elementary program. Please note that our before and after school programs do not begin for elementary students until the 10th.
* September 8 & 9: Phase-in schedule for all NEW Toddler and Primary students to support a gentle, secure transition into their new environments.
* September 10: Full schedule resumes for all students, including the official start date for all before and after school care programs.

We are looking forward to a wonderful year of community, growth, and discovery ahead.

Children are naturally driven to practice taking care of themselves and of their environment. At Acorn Montessori School, we weave these vital self-care skills into our daily classroom routines through purposeful Practical Life exercises.

🕊️A Peace Corner in Montessori is a calm, inviting space where children can go to self-regulate, reflect, and resolve conflicts peacefully. It gives children the opportunity to pause, recognize their feelings, and return to the classroom community when they are ready.

Montessori guides teach children how to use the space independently and model respectful communication, listening, empathy, and problem-solving. When conflicts occur, children can use the Peace Corner to calm themselves and, when appropriate, come together to discuss what happened and find a peaceful solution.

Peace Corner supports independence, emotional regulation, respect, and peaceful conflict resolution. ✨

Self-regulation is often misunderstood as compliance or simple obedience. In a Montessori environment, true self-regulation is the internal capacity to monitor and manage one’s energy states, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in ways that are acceptable and produce positive results.We do not teach self-regulation through external rewards, punishments, or constant adult direction. Instead, it is cultivated naturally through the interaction between the child and the prepared environment.

Here is how self-regulation is built daily in our classrooms:

The Freedom of Choice: When a child is permitted to choose their own purposeful work, they connect deeply with an activity that matches their current developmental need. This deep concentration calms the nervous system and fosters internal discipline.

Built-In Control of Error: Our materials are designed to provide immediate feedback. If a child spills water or misplaces a block, the material itself shows the error. The child learns to pause, assess, and self-correct independently, without needing an adult to point out a mistake.

Rhythms of the Community: Waiting for a specific material that a peer is currently using teaches natural patience and respect for others. The child learns to navigate their desires within the context of a social community.

True self-regulation cannot be forced; it must be constructed by the child through meaningful activity. When we step back and allow children the space to navigate challenges independently, we support the development of a lifelong internal anchor.
