Host. Mentor. Hire. — Turning Exposure into Employment.

What an incredible turnout for our Warren County Business Advisory Council Q1
meeting!

We were thrilled to welcome so many of our education and industry partners for a
morning focused on one important question: How do we turn career exposure into real
opportunities for students and students into entry-level employees for our business
partners?

The conversation reinforced that meaningful work-based learning doesn't happen by
accident. It takes employers willing to host, professionals willing to mentor, and
education and industry partners working together to create experiences that can
ultimately lead to employment.

We shared ideas, explored best practices for internships and work experiences, and
continued the important work of strengthening the connections between our classrooms
and our workplaces.

Most encouraging was the energy in the room. The outstanding turnout was a powerful
reminder that Warren County has employers and educators who are committed to
building opportunities for students and building our future workforce at the same time.
Work-Based Learning IS Workforce Development.

Thank you to every business and education partner who showed up, shared your
perspective, and continues to invest in this work. This is exactly what the WCBAC was

On World Mental Health Day, our team spends the day doing what they do every day: listening.

This year's theme is "Lived experiences heard: Real voices, real change." For the students we serve, that isn't a slogan. It's the quiet work of a staff member who notices when a kid goes silent, who waits out a hard morning, who takes a real voice seriously even when it comes out sideways.

Listening is how trust gets built here. It's how a student who struggled everywhere else finds a place where their day makes sense again.

Today we're grateful for the people who show up ready to hear it, and for the students who trust us enough to speak. That's how stigma loses its grip and how a school community gets stronger.

What a night at the Learning Center! Our first Family Engagement Night of the year brought families together around books, and it was a joy to watch.

The evening had a literacy theme, and it showed everywhere you looked. Read-alouds. Fall games. A visit to the Scholastic Book Fair, where students got to pick out books to take home and enjoy.

Families also connected with community resources from our local library and CareSource, right there in the room.

What we loved most was the connection. Students playing alongside their families. Parents meeting one another. A lot of reading, and a lot of laughter.

Thank you to everyone who came out and helped make it a success, and thank you to the Warren County ESC team who put it together. We're already looking forward to the next one.

Fire Prevention Week at TLC!

Lt. Julie Miller from the Mason Fire Department visited TLC to teach our interns about fire prevention and kitchen safety!

Lt. Miller shared important tips for staying safe while cooking and gave our interns the opportunity to practice using a fire extinguisher with a VR simulator. Interns practiced pulling the pin, aiming the extinguisher, and spraying the virtual fire.

Hands-on experiences like this give our TLC interns the opportunity to practice real-life safety skills while building their confidence and independence in the kitchen.

At TLC, learning happens by doing. Our interns are running real businesses this fall, building employment skills and gaining confidence through hands-on experience.

ESCape the Grind, our student-run coffee shop, started the school year with 25 subscriptions for the month. Staff members can purchase a monthly subscription that includes one drink per sale day. Our interns serve a variety of hot and cold drinks four days a week, with specialty drinks featured two days a week. September’s specialty was a Pumpkin Spice Macchiato, and in October, the interns are serving Hot Apple C***r.

Behind every order, they’re practicing essential employment skills: preparing drinks, handling money, operating the Square system, and providing customer service. With each order, they continue to grow more confident and independent.

One business, meaningful learning opportunities, and a team of interns developing skills they can carry into future employment and everyday life.

What a Friday at the Preprofessional Academy!

Our students spent the day exploring careers in the medical field, and they didn't just listen. They put on gloves and got to work.

The patient transport overview turned into a wheelchair race, with students testing their skills against the clock. From there, they heard directly from professionals who do this work every day: Katherine Dye, Clinical Educator at TriHealth Clinton Regional Hospital, and Tiffany Block, Account Manager and Donor Recruitment at Versiti Blood Center of Ohio.

The day closed with a Stop the Bleed session led by Ann M. Brock, RN, BSN, CEN, TCRN, EMT-P, Trauma Outreach Coordinator at WCSCC Atrium Medical Center. Students walked away on track to earn their Stop the Bleed certification, a real credential they can carry into a real career.

Thank you to Sinclair Community College in Mason and to every professional who gave our students a hands-on look at the work. Days like this are what the PPA is built for.

Some of the most important skills our students build aren't learned at a desk.

We're glad to continue our partnership with Hope Reins, giving selected 8th grade students at the John Lazares Career Exploration Center the chance to take part in equine-assisted learning.

Working alongside horses creates a setting you can't recreate in a classroom. Students build confidence, patience, and trust. They practice reading another creature, staying calm, and communicating clearly. Those are the skills that carry into the classroom, the workplace, and everything after.

At the JLCEC, career exploration goes deeper than picking a future job. It's where students find out how they respond to a challenge, how they connect with others, and what they're capable of.

Thank you to Hope Reins for giving the students we serve another way to learn, grow, and recognize their own strengths.

Why WCESC? Meet Laura H.

Laura H. joined our MD team this school year, but her interest in working at an ESC began while she was teaching preschool. A parent of one of her students would talk about working at an ESC, and Laura remembers thinking it sounded like “a place I would love to work!”

Now that she is here, Laura has found a team that shares her commitment to children. She describes the atmosphere as one of “hard work, support, and passion for making the best experience and care for children who need it the most.” For someone settling into a new role, she says, “Having co-workers who are all there for the right reasons is priceless!”

What has she enjoyed most so far? Being there for children who need “unconditional love, validation, and acceptance.” And what has surprised her in the best way is “the joy and love everyone has for not only the children, but for each other.”

Laura is looking forward to learning more about the roles she and her teammates play in the lives of the children they serve. In her words, they are “amazing, resilient, wonderful children!”

Today our team is wearing green for Start With Hello Week.

A hello is small, and it does real work. It can spark a friendship, build a sense of belonging, and remind a student that someone noticed them today. For the students we serve, that moment of feeling seen can change how a whole day goes.

Why WCESC? Meet Miss C

Cynthia S., known to many as Miss C, has been part of WCESC for four years. Her story here began even earlier, when she visited while working for another organization. She was supporting two students and remembers thinking, “I would love to work here someday.”

When a position became available, she applied. She wanted to work with students who were struggling in a traditional school setting and needed additional support to succeed. The beginning was not without uncertainty. Her program supervisor, Jason Boone, encouraged her to give the role two weeks before deciding whether it was the right fit. “His advice made all the difference,” she says.

Today, Miss C is a Business Mentor who has helped launch and grow Phoenix Fire Pizza and Bakery, one of our student-run businesses. Mike Montaniz, Sr. Executive Director of Social Emotional Learning, trusted her with that opportunity—one she says helped her grow both professionally and personally.

“I genuinely look forward to coming to work each week,” she says. Wednesdays mean making pizza dough alongside students for Thursday’s sales. Fridays mean baking cookies together. Through that work, students build business and life skills, practice grit, and learn to see setbacks as opportunities to grow.

For Miss C, the reward is seeing those lessons take hold beyond the kitchen. “One of the most rewarding moments is hearing students bring up these topics months later and seeing how they have applied them in their own lives.”

She is grateful for the encouragement of her leaders and coworkers. But when asked who has made the biggest difference, she comes back to her students: “They have trusted me to be part of their journey, allowed me to work alongside them, and shared important parts of their lives with me.” Watching them overcome challenges inspires her every day.

Her advice to someone considering WCESC captures what she has found here: “The students will challenge you, inspire you, and teach you just as much as you teach them.”
