University of Saint Mary Founded in 1923 by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, the University of Saint Mary has a long tradition of academic excellence.

Founded in 1923 by the Sisters of Charity and Leavenworth, the University of Saint Mary has a long tradition of academic excellence. USM has over 30 majors, minors, and concentrations (on campus and online), along with 24 sports programs plus co-ed cheer and dance, an active campus ministry, and clubs and groups for every interest.

This summer, USM students, alumni, faculty, staff, and Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth have helped grow and donate approximately 120 pounds of organic produce.

Sustainability has been at the heart of the USM Community Garden, with campus compost, repurposed fencing, pollinator-friendly flowers, and no pesticides used.

And this is just the beginning! Next year, the garden team hopes to expand its growing space, experiment with new plots and practices, and increase community outreach. A new spring course, Soil to Society: Ecology, Equity, and Human Well-Being, will also help students engage with and shape the garden's continued growth.
