USM - Music mourns the passing of our former leader, one of our biggest supporters of all time, an amazing pianist and organist, and a devoted Sister of Charity of Leavenworth.

Sr. Anne Callahan accompanied Dr. Vance 7 years ago (at 90 years young!) when he auditioned/interviewed and played a trombone recital for the search committee and guests. She sight read every piece he brought for her without a hitch. She always attended every single concert she could make. Her presence showed the devotion she held to music, to Saint Mary, and to our students.

And so looking forward, we stand on the shoulders of giants. We will cherish our memories of Sr. Anne as we carry the torch onward 🎵 ❤️

With heavy hearts, we join the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth in mourning the loss of Sister Anne Callahan (formerly Sister Mary Incarnata).

Sister Anne passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 13, 2026, at Providence Medical Center. She was 97 years old. She entered the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Community on August 19, 1948, and dedicated her life to faith, service, and the mission of the Community.

Funeral and burial arrangements are pending.

Please keep Sister Anne, her family, friends, and the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Community in your prayers. May she rest in the full embrace of God's love.

We are so excited to share with you the final concert of the season: An Unending Legacy. This event will feature both the Concert Chorale and the University/Community Band.

We will also premiere a new piece written specifically for our wind ensemble, written by our own community member, Christopher Burnett. “South Wind People” is written as a tribute to the Indigenous people and many tribes of Kansas.
