An observant teacher said she can tell in the first week of school which kids are emotionally taken care of at home.
1. "The ones who were fine could lose a game without the room having to manage it."
She said she never once worried about a seven-year-old who could come second and keep playing.
"That kid has been allowed to lose at home."
2. "They asked me questions. Not for attention. Because somebody at home answered the last four hundred."
She said the quiet ones weren't shy nearly as often as people assumed. They'd just learned that questions cost something.
3. "They could be bored for six minutes without needing to be rescued from it."
"Every year more of them arrive unable to sit in a gap. That's not the child. That's what happens when every gap gets filled by an adult with a phone."
4. "They said sorry without a speech attached. No explanation. "
She said the parents who apologized to their own kids, plainly, on the same day, set the example.
5. "They knew what they were good at, and it wasn't reading."
"Every child needs one thing they're the household expert on. Doesn't matter what. A kid with one area of competence handles being bad at something else completely differently."
Let’s take care of our kids!
