The CSHS Biomedical Engineering Team competes at NASA 3 times per year, and additionally has the chance to present at the Human Research Program conference in January.
Students will work on teams to design a prototype solution to the following challenges from NASA flight surgeons, engineers, and astronauts:
⚡️KardiaMobile 6-Lead Holster — Students will design a wearable, thigh-mounted holster that allows one caregiver to quickly take a 6-lead ECG from an unconscious astronaut
⚡️Lunar Splint Design Challenge — Students will design and 3D-print a custom splint for an injured astronaut on the Moon
⚡️ARED Exercise Protocol for Commercial Crew — Students will research bone and muscle physiology to develop a 1–3 month exercise program for astronauts using the ARED
⚡️IV Fluid Administration — Students will design, build, and test a working IV system that can safely deliver fluids and eliminate dangerous air bubbles in microgravity
⚡️ARES Lunar Dust Project — Students will test different filtration methods for lunar dust and research how regolith affects multiple body systems
⚡️Transit Habitat Food Storage — Students will design and build a prototype food-storage system that uses the extreme cold of deep space to keep food safely refrigerated or frozen during a Mars mission
⚡️Lunar Smart Adaptive Habitat with AI Psychological Monitoring — Students will design a model lunar habitat and develop an AI-based system that monitors astronauts’ psychological well-being and adapts the environment to support their mental health
⚡️Medical Diagnostic System with AI & Machine Learning — Students will develop an AI system that uses astronaut symptoms, medical data, and sensor information to help diagnose illnesses and injuries when communication with Earth is unavailable
⚡️AI Plant Growth for Space — Students will build an AI-assisted “robot greenhouse” that monitors individual plants, detects stress, and automatically adjusts water, light, and growing conditions
⚡️Lunar Sleep-Shift Scheduling Tool — Students will create an offline software tool that develops personalized sleep, nap, caffeine, and fatigue-management schedules for astronauts
