🍀We’re looking for a few amazing people to join our Clover Kids team!🍀

As we get ready for another year of Clover Kids, we are currently looking for leaders for our Remsen, Akron, and Gehlen groups!

Over the past year, a few of our wonderful longtime leaders have moved on as their Clover Kids grew into 4-H, while others have moved out of the area. We are so thankful for the time they gave to our program, and now we’re looking for some new faces to step into these roles!💚

Clover Kids leaders meet with their group once a month after school until 5:00 PM, October through May. These are paid positions, and we make it as easy as possible for our leaders. We provide curriculum, activities, supplies, snacks and support!! You get to focus on spending a fun, hands-on afternoon with some pretty amazing 1st–3rd graders.🍀

We have been working hard to fill these remaining openings, and with the new Clover Kids year quickly approaching, we would love to have our leaders in place as soon as possible, as sessions start in October.

Interested or know someone who would be a great fit? Please message our page or call the Plymouth County Extension Office at 712-546-7835 and ask to speak with Emily Nelson.

And please help us spread the word by sharing!💚🍀

Growing More Than a Garden!🌱🍅🌿

This spring, ISU Extension and Outreach – Plymouth County and the Le Mars Area Family YMCA partnered to create the YMCA Teaching Garden. In mid-May, Emily Nelson, K-12 Program Coordinator with ISU Extension and Outreach, and Krista Bolton from the YMCA teamed up to bring this project to life. Thanks to the generous donation of raised garden beds from a YMCA member, along with donations of soil and plants from our community, we were able to plant three thriving raised garden beds!

This week, we celebrated all of that hard work with a Harvest Party! The kids harvested fresh tomatoes and peppers before hopping on the Blender Bike to make delicious homemade salsa.

Along the way, they learned:
🌿 About the many herbs growing in our herb garden by picking and smelling each one.
🍅 The different varieties of tomatoes we grew and which ones make the best salsa.
🫑 About the peppers in our garden and how fresh produce is grown right here in Iowa.

As with any first-year garden, we learned a lot! We discovered ways to improve planting spacing and garden planning for an even better harvest next season. While our harvest may not have been huge, it was incredibly rewarding to enjoy fresh, homegrown salsa made from produce the kids helped grow themselves.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated materials and supported this project. Partnerships like these create hands-on learning experiences that help kids connect with where their food comes from.

Enjoy a few photos from our Harvest Party, along with some snapshots of the garden’s journey from planting day to harvest! 🌱❤️📸
