And now we have reached the end…

Our 2025-2026 speech season came to a close today as we performed at the IE All-State Festival in Cedar Falls. A windy, warm day in March - usually we are all bundled up in winter jackets at this festival, but not today!

Performing today:
Nancy Lundula - solo musical theater “Astonishing”
Ethan Hargens - expository address “Percussion 101”
Nick Bakeberg - storytelling “Three Billy Goats Gruff”

What an amazing day filled with so many laughs, smiles, hugs, inside jokes, and kids putting their heart & soul into performing. What a great learning experience being able to see the best of the best from across the state. Nancy, Ethan, and Nick should be very proud of this incredible achievement!

We had a great season and I always feel a little bittersweet when it all comes to an end. The entire speech season is almost 6 months long and we spend countless hours working on these performances. I love these kids and their willingness to put themselves out there. They are great leaders and their talents will continue to shine well beyond high school! 💚

Our Thespians enjoyed an evening out on the town tonight! 💃🏻 Students got to travel up to Sioux Falls to see a production of “Clue” performed at the Washington Pavilion. They loved the show and a good time was had by all!

This field trip was made possible with a generous donation from the Conover Foundation.

WE’RE OFF TO CEDAR FALLS FOR ALL-STATE!!!

Congratulations to IE Speech students Ethan Hargens, Nancy Lundula, and Nick Bakeberg for being selected to perform at the 2026 IE Speech All-State Festival. They will be performing at the University of Northern Iowa on Monday, March 30. This is the highest honor a speech student may receive in the state of Iowa.

It was a great day for speech in Iowa!!!

The LCHS Individual Speech team travelled almost 2 hours to Denison High School yesterday for the state contest. We had an incredible day of performances and are SO PROUD to announce our results:

20 division one ratings (with 17 of those being STRAIGHT ONES!!!)
1 division two rating

If you see a speech kid around this week, be sure to congratulate them on these fabulous ratings!! Specific ratings & categories are listed in the image captions below.

WOW! WOW! WOW! We continue to be floored by the effort & talent of our team. Even more than that, I as a coach am just so happy with everyone’s great attitude and willingness to support each other, even in individual events. 12 hour days don’t get any of these kids down - they are still begging to stop for ice cream on the way out of town 🙂

Thank you all for a fantastic regular season!! Speech team forever 💚

On Saturday, February 21, sophomore students Nick Bakeberg and Micah Broers had the honor of performing their group mime titled “Cleaning Concerto” at the 2026 Large Group Speech All-State Festival at Iowa State University.

This was a fantastic way to close out the large group season and both boys did a great job representing our school. A big thank you to anyone who supported us along the way this season. Special shoutout to Mrs. Boeve for going above and beyond on this trip as well!

Our LCHS Large Group Speech team had a great showing at the state contest on Saturday, February 7th in Cherokee. We competed in 12 events, taking home 9 division one ratings and 3 division two ratings.

Special shoutout to Nick Bakeberg and Micah Broers for being nominated to perform their group mime "Cleaning Concerto" at the 2026 large group speech all-state festival! They will perform at Iowa State University on Saturday, February 21.

As always, thank you to all parents & families for coming out to support the team. Speech kids work tirelessly throughout a very busy winter season, even when they have a million other things on their agendas. Many participants really grew in their craft and creativity this year. Some students in particular were fabulous leaders and helped encourage their teammates. We heard a lot of fantastic comments from judges and will continue to work hard in the future. At the end of the day, positive thinking, teamwork, and perseverance are the keys to success in speech!

LCHS Speech was off bright and early on the bus to Storm Lake yesterday for district large group contest! In 15 performances, we took home 12 division one ratings!!

The whole team had a blast and brought their A-game. But one of the best parts of the day was the support shown to all teammates. There was one group improv performance where we walked into the room to sit down beforehand and I heard another audience member (from another school) remark: “Geez, did they bring their whole school with them?” as it quickly became a standing-room only situation. Nope, just me and about 50 teenagers in tow! 😂

Congrats to all students on their impressive results. Thank you to parents & families who made the drive to support the team too. I (Jocelyn Hommes) could never manage the logistics without help, so shoutout to Tifany Vincent Wright and Molly Boeve for their never-ending support. Also props to Josie Krook-Brunette for helping with our musical theater kids in the last few weeks!

Not a lot of pictures as we were too busy having fun and working hard. Next time there will be more!!

Next performance: Saturday, February 7th at Cherokee Washington High School for large group state!! Let’s do this!!

Huge congratulations to graduating senior, Riley Peterson! Riley was the 2025 NW Iowa recipient of the IHSSA Hall of Fame scholarship!

Riley was surprised with this award at the senior awards night on May 14. BJ and Julie Schuller, IHSSA Hall of Famers, presented it to her.

On Monday, May 5th, the Thespians hosted their annual end of the year banquet. Here, we celebrated the accomplishments of Thespian related activities throughout the 24-25 school year, gave recognition to our graduating seniors, and inducted over 20 new Thespian members! We also awarded our Outstanding Thespian Award, given to the senior with the highest point total -- this year, Theo Trimble received the award.

We would also like to give a special farewell to our Thespian Committee: President Riley Peterson, Vice President Theo Trimble, and Secretary Addison Haack. Although our Committee will be gone, we will be electing new seniors for these roles in August of 2025. Stay tuned!

Thank you to all who have supported the Thespians, through highs and lows, thick and thin. Hope to see you next year!
