Playing cards with children who have dyslexia can offer multiple benefits, including cognitive, social, and academic advantages. Here are some of the key benefits:

Enhances Working Memory: Many card games require players to remember rules, track card sequences, or recall previously played cards, which can strengthen working memory—a skill often challenging for children with dyslexia.

Improves Processing Speed: Fast-paced card games can help improve processing speed, aiding children in becoming quicker and more efficient thinkers.

Reinforces Math and Sequencing Skills: Games that involve counting, adding, or arranging cards in sequences can enhance numeracy and logical thinking, which are beneficial for overall academic performance.

Boosts Visual and Pattern Recognition: Identifying suits, numbers, and sequences helps improve visual discrimination and pattern recognition, which are often areas of difficulty for children with dyslexia.

Encourages Turn-Taking and Social Interaction: Playing cards promotes patience, social skills, and teamwork, contributing to emotional and social development.

Supports Phonological Awareness: Games like "Go Fish" or word-related card games (e.g., "Scrabble Slam") can reinforce phonics, spelling, and vocabulary in a fun, low-pressure environment.

Builds Confidence: Achieving success in games provides opportunities for children to experience mastery and build self-esteem, which can positively impact their approach to learning.

Back-to-School Season is Here!

While many kids are excited to reconnect with friends, meet new teachers, and dive into fresh learning experiences, others may feel anxious because reading and writing are especially challenging for them. Some children develop strategies to mask their struggles, but these difficulties often become apparent during assessments. Don’t overlook these signs!

Does your child struggle with reading, forming letters, sounding out words, or spelling? When reading, are they able to attach meaning to the words and create a mental movie in their mind?

Can your child correctly form letters, distinguishing between tall, small, and fall letters, or do all the letters look the same size? Is their handwriting organized and legible, or do they struggle to write in straight lines and use the lines on the paper effectively? These are important indicators of dysgraphia, yet formal handwriting instruction has been neglected in many schools for years.

I’m here to help! I specialize in working with students who exhibit characteristics of dyslexia and dysgraphia. If you or your child’s teacher suspect something might be wrong, but you’re not sure what it is, I offer a free consultation. I can conduct quick assessments for students in Grades K-8 to help determine if your child may be struggling with dyslexia or dysgraphia.

Let’s work together to ensure your child has the support they need for a successful school year!

Thank you so much to the following people for your referrals: friends and family and all of my colleagues from TCU, St. Peter, and LSH!!

My in-person tutoring times have almost filled in and I will have to start adding interested people to the wait list soon.

I still have some availability during the daytime for homeschool families or other families who could potentially tutor during the day for Grades K-8. These can be in person if you are nearby, but I also tutor remotely.
