Cheer Prep Class – What It Takes to Make the Team
Competitive junior high and high school cheer teams evaluate athletes, on much more than just enthusiasm—they are looking for well-rounded, skilled performers who can execute with confidence and precision under pressure.
In Davis County school tryouts, athletes are typically evaluated in the following areas:
Performance & Motions
Athletes must demonstrate sharp, clean arm motions, strong voice projection, confident performance, and the ability to stay precise and synchronized.
Jumps
Proper technique, height, and control are key. Common jumps include toe touches, herkies, and pikes—all performed with correct form and strong landings.
Tumbling
While requirements vary, athletes who can perform skills such as cartwheels, round-offs, back walkovers, or back handsprings have a significant advantage.
Flexibility
Splits (right, left, and middle), high kicks, and overall flexibility are essential for strong jumps, stunts, and performance quality.
Dance & Learning Ability
Tryouts often include a short dance and cheer taught at clinics. Athletes are expected to quickly learn, retain, and confidently perform choreography.
Stunting (when applicable)
Basic understanding of stunting roles (flyer, base, back spot) can help athletes stand out, especially at more competitive levels.
Attitude & Coachability
Coaches look for athletes who are positive, hardworking, respectful, and open to feedback. These qualities can be just as important as physical skills.
Why Year-Round Training Matters
These skills CANNOT be developed in a few weeks before tryouts. Strength, flexibility, technique, and confidence take time and consistent practice to build safely and effectively.
Our Cheer Prep Class meets 2 hours per week, year-round, to give athletes the structure and repetition they need to truly improve. Instead of rushing to prepare right before tryouts, athletes in our program train consistently—so they walk in, confident, prepared, and ready to stand out.
Whether your athlete is just starting, working toward a competitive team, or already is on a cheer team, this class provides the foundation needed to succeed.
