It amazes me how defensive educators can get on social media, particularly during the summer. Sometimes we on too tightly to beliefs that are just wrong.

OH YEAH!!!! THAT WAS FUN!!! I’m SUCH a GEEK!!!🤭🤭
Can we remove the narrative to parents that reading to their children will help their children learn to read? It won’t, but we need to explain the truth about what it CAN do.
I’m going to repeat this, as I’ve now been on an 11-year learning journey. I was a teacher for 10 years and knew NOTHING about Child Find or dyslexia.

One of the things that needs to be done is explaining dyslexia to students who are newly diagnosed. The BEST book I’ve read about a fictional student experience was Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. It’s about a MS student who doesn’t understand why she struggles to read and her journey of discovery. For younger students, there is a book on Amazon titled: It’s Called Dyslexia. The link is below. My hope is that conversations are held with the students who are struggling so that they understand the why of their struggles. I hope my recommendation helps. I’ll share others as I find them because this is a necessary conversation.

The death and disappearance of Black children isn’t a concern in this country.
You cannot JUST accommodate dyslexia in MS and HS. Those students need strong instruction to fill in the missing knowledge so they can access text.
