It was a great week on Capitol Hill! GSBA staff, members of our Board of Directors and school board members from across Georgia joined fellow state school board associations in Washington, D.C., this week for COSSBA’s Federal Advocacy Conference.

This annual gathering gives us an opportunity to share the perspectives and priorities of Georgia’s public schools with federal leaders. Our group attended a constituent meeting with U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock and met with staff from the offices of Senator Warnock and U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff.

GSBA staff in attendance included:

Please join us in congratulating the GSBA Worker’s Compensation Fund on being named a 2026 Theo Award winner. 🏆👏

This award recognizes the GSBA Risk Management team for its approach to workers’ compensation, injury prevention, and risk management for Georgia’s public school systems.

to a few weeks ago in Baldwin County at Midway Hills Elementary, where GSBA helped bring the school’s new Legacy Library to life as part of our 75th Anniversary Days of Giving initiative.

Designed to promote literacy, the Legacy Library features books selected by teachers, staff, administrators, and student leaders, each paired with a personal note sharing why that book has made an impact on them.

The collection will continue to grow and change throughout the year, creating a lasting space for students to discover books and be inspired to read.

Thank you to the Midway Hills Academy community for welcoming us and letting us be part of such a meaningful project!

For our fifth Class of 2026 Youth Advisory Council student highlight, we are pleased to introduce Kaydence Joiner!

A junior from Turner County Schools, Kaydence is passionate about expanding access to CTAE pathways and career opportunities for students in rural communities. She also hopes to bring attention to school safety transparency and disability awareness. Kaydence has already impressed us with her insight, and we look forward to seeing her use her voice to bring positive change.

This weekend, we celebrated 75 years of service to Georgia’s public school boards in a very special way.

Longtime supporters, staff, past presidents, and business partners gathered on September 19 for the GSBA 75th Anniversary Gala. Together, we reflected on GSBA’s history through a special timeline display and a collection of artifacts from years past.

We also introduced the Phillip L. Hartley Legacy of Leadership Student Scholarship through the GSBA Foundation Fund, honoring Phil’s lasting impact on public education and supporting the next generation of Georgia students.

We then looked ahead during a Passing the Light Ceremony, symbolizing our continued commitment to students and communities for 75 years and beyond.

A big thank you to Cox Enterprises for sponsoring this special evening and to everyone who joined us in celebrating GSBA’s legacy. It was truly a night to remember!

It’s been a productive and action-packed few days at the GSBA office!

We were glad to welcome both the EBS Board of Directors and the GSBA Board of Directors for back-to-back days of collaboration, conversation, and important work on behalf of Georgia’s public schools.

For our fourth Class of 2026 YAC student highlight, we are pleased to introduce Elijah Lee!

A senior from Gwinnett County Public Schools, Elijah joined the council with a strong interest in financial literacy education. He is passionate about helping schools equip students with the practical knowledge and skills they need to build successful financial futures.

We are excited to have Elijah on the council and look forward to seeing how he uses his voice to advocate for students and his community.

School safety is a top priority for school governance teams across Georgia, and prepared, informed leadership plays a critical role in keeping students and staff safe.

Join us September 28 in Perry for the Leading Safe Schools: Governance in Action Workshop. Dr. Craig Lockhart, Superintendent of Valdosta City Schools, and Sabrina Smith, Director of Safety and Security, will share insights from the district’s 2025 response to a gunman on campus and examine the governance team’s role during a crisis.

Attendees will also explore emergency planning, policy and crisis leadership through a discussion of John McDonald’s The Essential 5. Each attendee will receive a complimentary copy.
