Now that you've met the staff, we'd like to introduce our directors! Both Azja and Dr. Harris take your time at the Jayhawk Debate Institute seriously. They have worked diligently to cultivate a space where any and every student can learn! While they may not be leading labs, they will always be around. So make sure to introduce yourself!
Dr. Harris, a man of many titles, leads us through another summer of growth and excellence! Dr. Harris has led Kansas Debate to numerous accolades. Recently, his leadership has resulted in another collegiate Copeland Award winner and KU's first CEDA National Championship. Without his experience, generosity, and passion the Jayhawk Debate Institute could not be possible. In addition to giving the camp's Topic lectures, Dr. Harris will be working across the camp to make sure all students are supported and properly primed for the upcoming season. This will be Dr. Harris's 35th summer at the JDI!
Azja Butler is East-Kansas born and a ride or die Jayhawk! She debated at the University of Kansas, earning first-round at large bids to the National Debate Tournament (NDT) in 2020 and 2021. She's won several nationally ranked tournaments at the collegiate level, was the first Black woman to be awarded Top Speaker for her performance at the NDT in 2021, and was the 'Baby Jo' Debater of the year in 2021. This year Azja was recognized as the 'Matt Grindy' Graduate Student Coach of the Year and The East Kansas District Assistant Coach of the Year! Azja has coached several teams to high school and collegiate championship titles. This will be Azja's 12th summer at the JDI!
