Title: Will the future have beer? Lessons from hop growers on sustainability and innovation for a changing climate

Abstract:
Forty farmers in Washington grow over thirty percent of the world's total hop output and breed many of the most popular varieties to supply beer makers.
In the first qualitative assessment of the US hop growing industry in over 100 years, Matt Comi reveals how this unique group of growers has vertically integrated to improve farmer autonomy and profitably during the last three decades. Comi's work explores how these farmers direct their on-farm research and development programs and how the politics of farmer-driven innovation diverges from those technologies pursued by large agricultural and pharmaceutical companies.
Comi's projects push forward environmental sociology by showing how farmers can meaningfully co-design more sustainable food systems in a changing climate along with Science and Technology Studies (STS) by showing how the politics of knowledge production change when farmers act as experts.
