Music classes for little ones and their grown-ups! Music Together® is an internationally renowned research-based program which began in 1987.

Music Together classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical. All children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with confidence in the music of our culture, provided that their early environment supports such learning. Central to the Music Together approach is that young children learn best from the powerful role model of parents/caregivers who are actively making music.

Each Music Together collection includes both original songs and traditional folk songs from around the world, so we get to play with all sorts of different kinds of beautiful music. And our curriculum isn't just a ton of fun — it's also based in extensive research, and carefully designed to best support your child as they learn the basics of rhythm and tonality while practicing motor and social-emotional skills.

Your children will love the energy of the Maracas collection! Our songs this semester include the American children’s song, "Ha Ha This a-Way" made famous by legendary blues guitarist Huddle Ledbetter (aka "Lead Belly"), the enchantingly rhythmic "Al citrón," based on a traditional Latin American children's game, and "'Bout My Friends," sure to have everyone dancing to its funky blues. In addition to your weekly classes, your tuition includes recordings and materials for you to use at home, including an illustrated songbook and access to the songs through the Music Together app.

I'm also able to offer a class at 10:30am on Fridays if there's interest. If you'd like to sign up for it, let me know, and if we get enough people I'll open registration again!

Fall semester starts this week, and there's still a couple spots left! Classes are 45 minutes, once a week for ten weeks, at 5:30pm on Thursdays or 10:30am on Saturdays. Register here: https://www.meadowlarkmusictogether.com/register.aspx

Music Together classes allow children to learn basic musical skills the same way they learn everything else: through play. Music is something we can all have fun doing together, regardless of our ability, and our ability grows as we experiment with it. In our classes we sing, chant, move, dance, and play with instruments and props, having fun with developmentally-appropriate activities designed to support the learning styles of young children.

In our Mixed-Age Family Classes, caregivers follow along with the teacher, singing and moving and modeling participation for their children. The kids are free to watch and listen, copy the grown-ups, or move and play in their own way. The mixed-age format gives them the opportunity to learn at their own pace, participate at their own level, and learn from each other, just like families do at home! Your child's classroom experience will grow and change as they do in this environment of joyful music-making.

Our song collections feature a mix of original and traditional music, in a variety of rhythms, tonalities, and cultural styles, so there's always something new to try out. And the fun doesn't stop at the end of class — every family receives a beautifully-illustrated songbook, and access to the semester's music collection via CD, digital download, or the Music Together app. Most of the activities we do in class are designed to be easily replicable at home, so you can continue to support your child's development and build wonderful memories by making music together as a family.

The first day of class is August 28th/30th, but if you miss it, don't worry — registration doesn't close until after the second week. We'd love to have you join us!

Winter semester starts this week, and it's not too late to sign up and join us!

Music Together isn't just a fun way to spend time with your kids and make friends with other families (though it sure is a ton of fun). It's also a research-based educational program that focuses on teaching basic musical competence; that is, the ability to sing in tune and move in rhythm. Our song choices, lesson plans, and activities are all carefully designed to give kids the opportunity to hear, see, and play with different rhythms, tonalities, and musical styles. Over multiple semesters in class, kids cycle between receiving musical information and experimenting with it, slowly learning how to sing the notes they hear, move in time with the actions they see, and even improvise in-key and on-beat.

With these skills under their belt, older kids can go on to make the most of formal lessons in instruments or dance, able to focus on learning specific techniques rather than the absolute basics of music. They can also just feel confident participating in regular, cultural music-making, like school dances or karaoke with their friends! Giving your children the chance to learn the basics when they're young opens up a whole world of opportunity, ensuring they can pursue whatever sorts of musical activities interest them for the rest of their lives.

Plus, musical learning supports all learning! Music Together classes encourage your growing child's linguistic development by giving them chances to experiment with everything from the basic syllabic and tonal building blocks of language, to rhymes and meter, to story-telling, to non-English languages. Our classes include a variety of fine and large motor activities, with special attention given to tricky tasks like crossing the midline, using your non-dominant hand, and controlling the speed and force of your movements. Our songs encourage dramatic play and can be used to teach children about tasks, emotions, animal actions, and any other topic that's currently relevent to their lives. Since our classes are play-based but still structured, they're also a great opportunity for young kids to practice the social skills they'll need when they move to more-formal classroom environments: things like taking turns, being careful of yourself and others, sharing, re-focusing attention, and self-regulation.

When kids grow up in this kind of encouraging, musical environment, their musical talents can blossom alongside other developmental areas, each skill strengthening the others. When they get to play with other families and children of other ages, they can learn from each other and become natural collaborators and leaders. Music Together is such an amazing program that benefits kids and parents in so many different ways! I'm so honored that I get to share it with other families in my community, and I would love to be able to share it with you this semester.

If you're interested in making music with us for the next 10 weeks, now's the time to register on our website! If you've never been to a Meadowlark Music Together class before and you'd like to experience it before you commit to signing up, you're welcome to visit on week one with no obligation to continue; just email me at [email protected] and let me know which class you want to visit and I'll make sure there's space for you. If the cost of tuition is preventing you from registering, please feel free to reach out and ask about our scholarships; we have a scholarship fund that I'm happy to use to make sure that every family who wants to join us gets the chance to do so, regardless of income level.

Have a wonderful winter! Let's make some music together this year!

Music Together was the first early childhood music program to offer music classes for mixed ages. Child development researchers have known for a long time that the natural, family-style environment of mixed-age classes is the best way for young children to learn. In our experience, it works! In Mixed-Age classes, the older children love to show what they know, and the younger ones love to watch and imitate. The relaxed, no-pressure environment lets all kids learn at their own pace.

Fall classes start in just a couple days! Register now for 10 weeks of musical fun with your little ones age 0-5. https://meadowlarkmusictogether.com/register.aspx

Each week, a trained Music Together teacher leads the class in singing, dancing, and playing songs that range from tender lullabies to boisterous jams using child-friendly percussion instruments. Our award-winning music, illustrated songbook, and other print and online resources will help you continue the music-making fun at home and nurture your child's musical growth—even if you don't think of yourself as a great singer or dancer. Like parenting, making music requires no previous experience or expertise, just a willingness to get down on the floor and get silly with your child!
