📣 This week KU History will welcome our third annual National Hispanic Heritage Month Speaker, Dr. Sergio González, to campus! González will present, “Sanctuary in the Heartland: Histories of Immigrant Justice in the Midwest.”

For decades, Midwestern churches, neighborhoods, and local leaders have played a pivotal role in creating social movements to protect refugees and defend immigrant communities. Drawing on extensive archival research and oral histories, this lecture traces the history of sanctuary from the 1980s to the present, revealing how questions of migration, faith, and belonging have shaped the region. By examining these struggles in historical context, the talk invites audiences to reconsider the Midwest’s pivotal place in the national story of immigrant justice.

We’re excited to announce a screening of In Search of Phillis Wheatley Peters on Monday, October 5 at 7 PM in Watson Library, 3 West.

‘In Search of Phillis Wheatley Peters’ is a 35-minute short film that reveals the little-known love story of Phillis Wheatley —America’s first published Black poet and John Peters, a free Black man she married in 1778. Drawing from the groundbreaking scholarship of historian Dr. Cornelia Dayton, the film brings new archival discoveries to life, revealing the couple’s struggles for autonomy, dignity, and survival in Revolutionary-era Boston. Featuring insights from leading scholars and poets, the film reimagines Phillis not just as a literary icon, but as a woman who chose love, partnership, and resistance against extraordinary odds.

Following the screening, join us for a 30-minute virtual Q&A with the director and producer.
