This is the conundrum I try to tackle in my book “Finding God’s Life for My Will.”
It’s the message we’re singing about in our (@tenthavenuenorth ) song “Letting Go For Dear Life.”

So much of my life I confused God’s will with God’s call.
It took me a long time to realize God’s will for my life is always available. It’s the way I live. It’s how I live. It’s the reason I live. It’s things like joy. It’s peace. It’s gratitude. It’s forgiveness. It’s the posture of my heart.

Now, his calling on my life is different. It’s specific. It can be a career path or a certain task. It’s actually a lot more things than I previously realized. See Ephesians 2:10. There are good works which he has created just for me to walk in. Just for you. But here’s the rub. So many times I have personally fallen in love with the calling and let my identity get wrapped up in it. The thing about calling is, it can change. Sometimes it’s a career. Sometimes it’s helping someone in need. Sometimes it’s yearly, sometimes it’s every day.

The key to joy is to not build my identity on the calling He gives me, but on the love of the one who calls. Now he’s free to change the calling, while I continue on in His will.
Whatever our occupation, His will remains the same. (See I Thess 5:16-18)

It’s worth repeating.
God is always after our hearts;
not our performance.
He’s after our presence,
not our production.
