10 Years ago almost to the day, University of Kansas faculty members and AAUP leaders attended the AFL-CIO Organizing Institute to learn how to organize a union. Last week, KU's first union contract was signed. Congrats to the KU Faculty! Here's to overcoming daunting challenges and issues!

Dark times for our country and academia...
U.S. Professor kidnapped and disappeared by ICE for nearly a day — he still remains detained.
Yesterday a California Faculty Association union leader, Professor Jonathan Caravello, was dragged away by four masked ICE agents while lawfully observing a raid. He was put in an unmarked vehicle with no explanation of where he would be taken and no access to his medication.
After a heart wrenching 20-hour search, he has finally been located, but remains in detention.
This is not normal.
Peaceful protesters, even American citizens, are being tear gassed and abducted by masked men with guns.
Yet in the face of this hate, Jonathan demonstrated the meaning of union solidarity. He stood up for his undocumented students and neighbors. We will never stop fighting for one another. And we won't be silent until our union brother is released. ✊

House Bill 2348 involving the stripping of property rights and due process protections of faculty members was heard yesterday in Topeka. Kudos to the Kansas Board of Regents, esp. Regent Flanders for speaking out against this abomination. The two shining stars were KU Chancellor Douglas Girod and K-State President Richard Linton. They came to bat for their faculty and faculty members all across the state. It was interesting to see Regent Flanders express his displeasure at the last minute introduction of this bill and hear eloquent faculty leaders and Washburn Student Body President George Burdick. This battle is not over as the committee has a supermajority of Republicans... so stay tuned!

The Emporia State University (ESU) Administration continues to punish hard working faculty members: After being directed by the courts to reinstate most faculty members, they are appealing the decision to district court, clearly hoping to run the faculty members into the ground financially. Please join us in helping these mistreated faculty members as they fight as a class against this injustice.

KBOR and the ESU Administration continue to shoot themselves in the foot by forcing an unnecessary, mean-spirited policy down the throats of faculty... and wasting huge sums of money in forcing things into the courts. Sadly, students, staff and alumni are being hurt -- degrees devalued and potentially being rendered worthless should ESU not pass accreditation next year. Here's the latest on the debacle:
‘A short-lived victory:’ Emporia State University takes reinstated professors to district court - Kansas Reflector
Emporia State University has asked a district court judge to review and reverse the reinstatement of five professors fired last year as part of a university-wide restructuring.
