Commander’s Cup 🏆

Five days. Five events. One competition.

Last week, our cadets went head-to-head with Army and Naval ROTC in the annual Commander’s Cup. This event challenged cadets in their physical endurance, teamwork, and determination.

Practice Makes Perfect

The Flying Jayhawks have been busy recently, with an introduction of new marching skills and Group Leadership Project (GLP) sessions!

Cadets continued to build their proficiency in Drill and Ceremonies through half-column movements, flight change of command procedures, guideon procedures, and building entrance procedures.

Once inside the building, cadets learned customs and courtesies on the presentation of the United States flag, as well as proper techniques for folding it. Following flag folding, cadets learned the procedures for Flag Detail, being able to conduct reveille and retreat to signify the beginning and end of the duty day.

LLAB also kicked off the first set of GLPs for the semester, challenging AS200s to step into leadership roles to both communicate effectively, and work with their team to accomplish a set mission within a given timespan.

With each new skill comes another opportunity to practice and improve!

25 Years, Never Forget

On 11 September 2026, Cadets and Midshipmen from Air Force, Army, and Naval ROTC alongside local First Responders and Active-Duty personnel completed a Memorial Staircase Run at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, completing 2,071 stairs to honor and understand a fraction of what first responders endured on 11 September 2001.

We honor the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives 25 years ago for freedom and preservation of the United States. May we never forget the victims, and those who answered the call to help.

Welcome to the Professional Officer Course

Congratulations and welcome back to Detachment 280’s newest Field Training graduates!

This summer, our cadets traveled to Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, where they completed a 20-day Field Training course. Throughout the experience, they were challenged both physically and mentally while putting the leadership, followership, discipline, and teamwork skills they developed in the General Military Course (GMC) to the test.

Following their successful completion of Field Training, these cadets have taken the next step in their AFROTC journey as members of the Professional Officer Course (POC).

Detachment 280 is proud of everything these cadets have accomplished and looks forward to seeing them apply their experience as leaders in the POC.

Building The Foundation

Guess who’s back? The Flying Jayhawks are back at it, with the fall semester officially underway!
Before the first week of classes, new AS100 and AS250 cadets received their introduction to Air Force ROTC during New Student Orientation (NSO). Over three days, cadets were introduced to physical fitness, the fundamentals of Drill and Ceremonies, customs and courtesies, and the expectations of the AFROTC program. By the end of NSO, our newest cadets were ready to take their first steps as members of the 280th Cadet Wing!

Building upon that foundation, LLAB 01-03 brought the Wing back into formation with introductory briefings including military rank structure, an overview of Group Leadership Projects (GLPs), and active review of basic and intermediate marching. Cadets sharpened their attention to detail, military discipline, and ability to operate together as a team!

Change of Command

LLAB 15 brought out the trophies and ties for the Change of Command Ceremony, where C/Col Kelly relinquished command of the 280th Cadet Wing to C/Col Brown. The Change of Command Ceremony allowed us to honor past leaders and welcome new leadership. The ceremony also allowed the Detachment to recognize cadets for their superior performance and all-around excellence this semester, including honors from national organizations.

Detachment 280 is grateful and proud of C/Col Kelly and her Wing Staff for their hard work this spring. C/Col Brown will carry the torch in the fall, transitioning from “Rise Above The Standard” to “Answer The Call”.
