No Judo this evening

One of the coolest moments for me as a coach happened this past weekend. When a parent you haven't seen in several years tells you that you are still the all time favorite coach. Like, stuff like that makes you feel awesome. It didn't have to be said, it wasn't fished out, nor rehearsed, just in casual conversation. That's when you come back to the basis of being a coach. It's not the money (there isn't a lot in coaching lol), it isn't the BJJ, it isn't the kicks or punches, it isn't really in the win/loss column. It's the personal development journey that the student is on. I'm honored to be a part of that for so many past, present, and future.

Next day thoughts. As a coach you always want your competitor to win. The reality is that's not always the case. Last night the True Grit family stepped into the ring for the first time. Muay Thai is a very different animal from BJJ. As we traveled to the event all the nerves were there for me as a coach. Walking into the event and being greeted by an old friend I haven't seen in a long time I felt very much at home. Craig and Jay went through med check, rules meeting, all the usual stuff. Then a few hours later we went to war. Up first was Jay, his first Thai fight and fairly new to the art. He loses after it goes the distance. Jay loses by decision. It should've went his way, he fought hard and had the guy walking out gingerly and ultimately chose to go straight home. I assure his opponents ribs are still tender.
Then Craig had his turn. His younger opponent had the reach and got caught early. If you ever taken a kick the kidney or liver areas you know how brutal they are. Though got dropped, he picked himself back up and went back to work. Thank you to Tyger Banks for hosting such a fun event. It was good to see you again bro. To Forrest Israel Muss thank you for bringing additional knowledge and being with our team. Thank you to Shannon for being supportive of our crazy journey. Love you my dear. Thanks to Jon and Julian for coming out. Thank you to Craig and Jay, myself and the entire TG game are incredibly proud of you. Gents like Teddy Roosevelt famously said. "no, the credit actually goes to the man in the area". Back to the lab we go....
