Matt Zupan (Meredith Hartley lab, chemistry) is doing a research internship “Investigating lipid signaling in cells using photo-activable lipid probes” at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon under the direction of Dr. Carsten Schultz.

You are invited to attend the Mentors Fall mentoring session with Dr. Blair Schneider, Geology, on Monday, December 6, 2021, from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Dr. Schneider will give a DEI Workshop titled: Tackling implicit bias and microaggressions in the workplace.

Rucha Mahadik (Teruna Siahaan's lab, pharmaceutical chemistry) participated in a research internship named "Biophysical characterization of adeno-associated viruses (AAVs)" for Biogen in Cambridge, Massachusetts under the direction of Nicholas Larson.

Title: EDI in the Biological Sciences: Advice for Graduate Students & Faculty

Abstract:
Despite decades of interventions, diversity within the biological sciences has seen only incremental progress and a continued unwillingness to change how we select, train, and hire historically excluded/underrepresented individuals from the undergraduate through the professoriate. I will summarize aspects of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion research as it relates to the Biological Sciences and its on-going challenge to apply what is widely known within the social science & STEM Education research. I will talk about an innovative undergraduate STEM/Biology program that has a history of student success with underrepresented populations. I will then transition to ways to make classrooms, textbooks, and related evaluation efforts more equitable with some examples from the literature and my own experience of teaching at PWIs and at a Tribal College.

Chembio mentor Tony Fehr gave three talks on his paper "On the Battlefront: Host PARPs vs the Coronavirus Macrodomain" at Johns Hopkins University, University of Missouri-Kansas City, and Kansas State University from November 2020 to February 2021.

Chembio Graduate Student Trainee Latavia Hill completed a research internship from March-June 2020 at Clinical Reference Laboratory and primarily worked to complete the early validation experiments needed for FDA emergency use authorization for a COVID-19 test. The CLR Clear COVID-19 test has received FDA-EUA approval and it is the test that KU is using to bring everyone back to campus safely.
